"The Gods of Mars" is the second volume of the famous Barsoom series. It was first published in All Story as a five part serial in the issues for January May 1913. It was later published as a complete novel by A. C. McClurg in September, 1918.

At the end of the first book, "A Princess of Mars", John Carter is unwillingly transported back to Earth. "The Gods of Mars" begins with his arrival back on Barsoom (Mars) after a ten year separation from his wife Dejah Thoris, his unborn child, and the Red Martian people of the nation of Helium, whom he has adopted as his own. Hard to listen to

The narrator makes many mistakes and is difficult to listen to. His S’s pierce my ears and grammar is not always accurate. I bought the same book by a different narrator and sampled it this time, so as not to have the same issue.

terrible narrator

everyone who said the narrator was bad was not wrong at all except that it was worse then they said. it was a hard audiobook to listen to. kinda want my money back from listening to this narrator.

good story, inferior reading quality

John Carter makes it back to Barsoom only to discover he is fighting for his life with the gods of the planet. What of his son and wife? Only time will tell and then maybe to late? A fine space opera with love lost, hope and fighting on all sides.

poor reading

the reader talks in short breaths, stutters, and struggles with a lot of the story. it's like an 8th grader reading an essay.

Awesome story, high grammar, reader can do better

The reader started with low energy but picked up the pace and became better, but he did not bring the story to life. Since I had watched the 1st series as a movie, I could make out most of his descriptions. Some of the words were not used in a manner to convey meaning, even if the purpose of the words themselves was not known. But I loved the story, the suspense,e, and the content.

Pronunciation problems throughout

I like the story but the narrator really struggles. Lots of mispronouncing of some of the 'names' of Barsoomian creatures, people, places and things. Also basic mispronunciation of common English words & phrases. That editors did not provide a pronunciation guide, and then failed to follow up and catch these mistakes during the editing process of this audio manuscript is apparent throughout the work.

I have been a fan and user of audio 'books' for decades, and I must honestly confess that this narrative is one of the poorer examples of the art.

Audible, you can do better than this. . .

Speech Problem

The reader trips over his tongue every few minutes. Regularly forgets to take breaths and pauses. Makes clicking sounds when he remembers to breath. Says eckscape for escape, enpregnetable for impenetrable.... Basically it's like listening to a fifth grader read out loud. Good story, unconscionable performance.

miss pronounced words, lip smacks, heavy breathing in the microphone.

What would have made The Gods of Mars (The Barsoom Series 2) better?

A narrator who could read without stumbling over the words, who didn't start to say one word and then correct it to another, and who didn't take loud breaths and smack his lips while reading.

Who was your favorite character and why?

As in the other Barsoom books, I liked John Carter, even though he is arrogant most of the time.

What didn’t you like about J. D. Weber’s performance?

He did a terrible job reading the book. It was miserable and embarrassing to listen to.

The book by Edgar Rice Burroughs was good, as are most of his books.

Sorry I bought this edition instead of the other version they offered for a couple of dollars more!
