Lucy is dutiful until . . .

I love the movie of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. I first saw it as a child. After repeated viewings, it never lost the sense of romance and magic I found on my first viewing. I was delighted to find the audiobook of the novel the movie was based on. The audiobook was as enjoyable as the movie although there are a few differences. The story follows Lucy a dutiful young woman of her age, late Victorian/Edwardian. Lucy was a good child, who married and was a good wife. She had two children and was a good mother. When her husband died, she found herself penniless because her husband had gambled with the stock market. Lucy, now a widow, is living with her husband's family who refers to her (to her face) as "poor. little Lucy). They make all her decisions including those for her children.

Lucy suffers a spell of rebelliousness and moves herself and her children to a house overlooking the sea near a village. The house she chooses is very inexpensive because no tenant stays more than 24 hours. The previous owner does not want new tenants. What follows is a lively story, at times full of joy and others heartbreaking but never, ever boring. Elizabeth Jasicki does a very nice job narrating.

A Fun Story For All Ages

I first read this story about 40 years ago, it was the first book that I read from cover to cover in one day.
I rediscovered this book recently and have enjoyed listening to it. I've enjoyed the old movie and the tv series.

Not as good as the Movie

This fluff listen for me as I love the Classic Movie of the same name. Story was not what I was expecting.

Elizabeth was enchanting with her ability to be Captain Greg as well as Lucy, I could almost see him, though of course you never do. I feel this is a timeless story and I enjoyed it immensely

Wow!!!

Saw the movie and TV series but this made me really jerk some tears in the end.

So much better than expected!

The book is so much better than the movie or the TV series. It’s surprisingly modern for a book written in 1945. Some issues and topics are timeless, and they’re addressed throughout the book, which is entertaining as well as thought-provoking.

I was dubious at first

I remember watching an old movie of this book but couldnt remember much. So glad I listened!!

Refreshing, full of humour, good characters, hasn't dated. Have recommended it to the book club ladies.

slow paced, but great listen

I got this book for free through the audible plus catalog. As I usually do, I select books books from audible plus based on the title (seeing how they are free, I usually tend to get several of them in one go and listen to them whenever). I honestly didn't know of the story or that there was a movie. Based on the title I assumed it would be a scary story. Instead, I found a nice slow paced story of a byegone era. I enjoyed it all the way through and thought the narrator did an excellent job in portraying all the characters.
