The start of a great space adventure

The characters on the heroes journey are likable, humorous and deadly. The author kept things moving and didn’t get into the weeds, leaving more for the reader to imagine. I will definitely read the rest of the series.

Sci-Fi comfort food. Great AA work.

Sci-fi enthusiasts are always on the lookout for that next captivating read, a book that strikes the perfect balance between immersive world-building, compelling characters, and a gripping narrative. While the AAA titles often dominate the spotlight, there's a certain charm to those solid AA stories that deliver a satisfying experience without necessarily reinventing the wheel. Final Dawn falls squarely into this category, offering a comforting read that feels like a warm hug for the soul.

From the outset, Final Dawn draws you in with its well-crafted world. Ashford paints a vivid picture of a Earth, Space, and beyond. Filled with fun robots, suspense, and driven characters. While the world-building might not reach the expansive depths of a Skyrim, it provides a solid foundation for the story to unfold.

The characters are undoubtedly the heart of this book. Jack, a fish out of water trying to get home, quickly becomes a relatable and endearing presence. Their journey is one of urgency, and along the way, they encounter a cast of memorable characters who add depth and intrigue to the narrative. His interactions with the robot crew are believable and satisfying. The character interactions feel genuine, and the relationships that develop throughout the story are both realistic and heartwarming.

The plot itself is a classic lost-in-space tale, filled with conflict, struggle, and suspense.. While the story might not break new ground in terms of originality, it's executed with finesse. The pacing is excellent, keeping you engaged without feeling rushed, and the twists and turns, while perhaps not entirely unpredictable, are still satisfying.

The writing style is fluid and accessible, making it an easy and enjoyable read. There were a few instances where the word choices felt a bit out of place, but these were minor quibbles that didn't detract from the overall experience. The author's ability to evoke emotions and create a sense of immersion is commendable.

If I were to draw a comparison, I'd say Final Dawn sits comfortably alongside games like GreedFall. Both offer a rich and engaging experience without necessarily reaching the overwhelming scale of a AAA title like Skyrim. They excel in their character development, world-building, and storytelling, providing a satisfying adventure that leaves you wanting more.

In a world of increasingly complex and demanding narratives, Final Dawn is a breath of fresh air. It's a reminder that sometimes, all you need is a well-told story with relatable characters and a captivating world to get lost in. This book is comfort food for the sci-fi soul, a perfect choice for those seeking an enjoyable and satisfying read without the pressure of groundbreaking innovation. It's a solid AA story that deserves a spot on your bookshelf (or Kindle).
