Acerca de esta escucha
When Brian De Palma agreed to allow Julie Salamon unlimited access to the film production of Tom Wolfe's best-selling book The Bonfire of the Vanities, both director and journalist must have felt like they were on to something big. How could it lose? But instead Salamon got a front-row seat at the Hollywood disaster of the decade. She shadowed the film from its early stages through the last of the eviscerating reviews, and met everyone from the actors to the technicians to the studio executives. They'd all signed on for a blockbuster, but there was a sense of impending doom from the start - heart-of-gold characters replaced Wolfe's satiric creations; affable Tom Hanks was cast as the patrician heel; Melanie Griffith appeared mid-shoot with new, bigger breasts. With a keen eye and ear, Salamon shows us how the best of intentions turned into a legendary Hollywood debacle.
The Devil's Candy joins John Gregory Dunne's The Studio, Steven Bach's Final Cut, and William Goldman's Adventures in the Screen Trade as a classic for anyone interested in the workings of Hollywood.

The story of how The Godfather was made is as dramatic, operatic, and entertaining as the film itself. Over the years, many versions of various aspects of the movie’s fiery creation have been told - sometimes conflicting, but always compelling. Mark Seal sifts through the evidence, has extensive new conversations with director Francis Ford Coppola and several heretofore silent sources, and complements them with colorful interviews with key players including actors Al Pacino, James Caan, Talia Shire, and others.

Chinatown is the Holy Grail of 1970s cinema. Its twist ending is the most notorious in American film and its closing line of dialogue the most haunting. Here for the first time is the incredible true story of its making. In Sam Wasson's telling, it becomes the defining story of the most colorful characters in the most colorful period of Hollywood history. Here is Jack Nicholson at the height of his powers, as compelling a movie star as there has ever been, embarking on his great, doomed love affair with Anjelica Huston.

Historia
In Oscar Wars, Michael Schulman chronicles the remarkable, sprawling history of the Academy Awards and the personal dramas—some iconic, others never-before-revealed—that have played out on the stage and off camera. Unlike other books on the subject, each chapter takes a deep dive into a particular year, conflict, or even category that tells a larger story of cultural change, from Louis B. Mayer to Moonlight. Schulman examines how the red carpet runs through contested turf, and the victors aren't always as clear as the names drawn from envelopes.

In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.

Regarded as a masterpiece today, 2001: A Space Odyssey received mixed reviews. Despite the success of Dr. Strangelove, director Stanley Kubrick wasn't yet recognized as a great filmmaker, and 2001 was radically innovative, with little dialogue and no strong central character. Author Michael Benson explains how 2001 was made, telling the story primarily through the two people most responsible for the film, Kubrick and science fiction legend Arthur C. Clarke. Benson interviewed Clarke many times, and has also spoken at length with Kubrick's widow, Christiane.

Robert Evans' The Kid Stays in the Picture is universally recognized as the greatest, most outrageous, and most unforgettable show business memoir ever written. The basis of an award-winning documentary film, it remains the gold standard of Hollywood storytelling. An extraordinary raconteur, Evans spares no one, least of all himself. The Kid Stays in the Picture is sharp, witty, self-aggrandizing, and self-lacerating in equal measure.

When it was finally released, Heaven's Gate failed so completely with reviewers and at the box office that it put legendary studio United Artists out of business and marked the end of Hollywood's auteur era. Or so the conventional wisdom goes. Charles Elton delves deeply into the making and aftermath of the movie and presents a surprisingly different view to that of Steven Bach, one of the executives responsible for Heaven's Gate, who wrote a scathing book about the film and solidified the widely held view that Cimino wounded the movie industry beyond repair.

It was the Golden Age of Radio and powerful men were making millions in advertising dollars reaching thousands of listeners every day. When television arrived, few radio moguls were interested in the upstart industry and its tiny production budgets, and expensive television sets were out of reach for most families. But four women - each an independent visionary - saw an opportunity and carved their own paths, and in so doing invented the way we watch TV today.

Caddyshack is one of the most beloved comedies of all time, a classic snobs vs. slobs story of working-class kids and the white-collar buffoons that make them haul their golf bags in the hot summer sun. It has sex, drugs, and one very memorable candy bar, but the movie we all know and love didn't start out that way, and everyone who made it certainly didn't have the word classic in mind as the cameras were rolling.

When Goodfellas first hit the theaters in 1990, a classic was born. Few could anticipate the unparalleled influence it would have on pop culture, one that would inspire future filmmakers and redefine the gangster picture as we know it today. From the rush of grotesque violence in the opening scene to the iconic hilarity of Joe Pesci’s endlessly quoted “Funny how?” shtick, it’s little wonder the film is widely regarded as a mainstay in contemporary cinema.

From getting his big break as Third Shepherd in the school nativity play, to mistaking a Hollywood star for an estate agent, Hugh Bonneville creates a brilliantly vivid picture of a career on stage and screen. What is it like working with Judi Dench and Julia Roberts, or playing Robert De Niro’s right leg, or not being Gary Oldman, twice? A wickedly funny storyteller, Bonneville also writes with poignancy about his father’s dementia and of his mother, whose life in the secret service emerged only after her death.

Horror films promise an experience: fear. But how exactly do filmmakers pull this off? The truth is, there's more to it than just loud noises and creepy images. With the affection of a true horror fan and the critical analysis of a scientist, Nesseth explains how audiences engage horror with both their brains and bodies, and teases apart the elements that make horror films tick. Hollywood in the 1950s was a period when the film industry both set conventions and broke norms and traditions—from Cinerama, Cinemascope and Vistavision to the epic film and lavish musical. It was a decade that saw the rise of the anti-hero; the smoldering, the hidden, and the unspoken; teenagers gone wild in the streets; the sacred and the profane; the revolution of the Method; the socially conscious; the implosion of the studios, the end of the production code; and the invasion of the ultimate body snatcher: the “small screen” television.

Interesting
I never heard of this movie before I got the book. I rented it after because I was intrigued because the book was well written and very detailed. It's narrated by the author which I usually like, but her voice is annoying and she was a weird subtle speech issue. However, I got over it because the story was good. The movie really did suck.

Eye opening look at the industry
Full of detail, I appreciate so much more of what goes into movies now. Anyone with an interest in film or criticism should hear this. Thoroughly engaging, I couldn't stop listening.

I Love This
This book is so good. I was hooked throughout the entire thing. I was introduced to this thanks to TCM's podcast "The Plot Thickens." Salamon writes in great detail about the hierarchy on set, the technicalities of making a movie, and the clash between the old and the new. It's fascinating for any film nerd. I found Salamon's unusual voice to be a bit grating at first, but I quickly got used to it and wasn't bothered by it anymore. My only real complaint is the sound editors should have done a better job editing out swallows and mouth noises between Salamon's sentences.

Informative. Educational. Entertaining.
A real behind the scenes look at filmmaking. Check out the Concord landing shot on YouTube. Magnificent!

WHAT A GEM!!!
This book should have a thousand 5 star reviews by now! It is a hidden gem for movie lovers, pop culture fanatics, and gen x people like me, who were young adults in the early ‘90’s. I am appreciating the picture of young directors and young actors who are still so familiar for the nostalgia and very human at work interactions/behind the scenes view Salamon gives us.
I like to spend my credits on books that are longer and this is wholly satisfying this far. Although I’m trying to pace myself, the first 10 hours have gone by fast. I am rather choosy about narration and agree with earlier reviewer that the author’s voice, while not at all polished sounding, is sincere and rather charming. Which brings me to perhaps what has charmed me the most so far in this story and it is ‘Brian DePalma.’ I admit to not having been overly familiar with him or his story and probably wouldn’t have considered him to be my cup of tea. However, without being fawning or at all fake, Salamon shows us a man who is sensitive and dare I say ‘polite,’ in a business that is full of characters who couldn’t recognize his sensibilities for what they are and may have dismissed him as rude or aloof. This can be a problem for sensitive people when they get overwhelmed or are in hyper-focus mode, so, I get it. We see his friendship with Spielberg (a very nice little scene I just finished.) We see young Tom Hanks and pregnant Rita Wilson... Melanie Griffith when she was hot in the scene and a smirking, young Bruce Willis. If you’ve worked on a movie set, the description of the pecking order and chaos will all come back to you. Lol.
All this and I haven’t even gone into the actual story of the making of the movie! There is a lot there, full of detailed misunderstandings, wins, heartbreak and absurdity. For now I plan on watching it again with my husband who has enjoyed listening to me pass on stories from this book, as soon as I’ve finished listening. Definitely recommend! It’s a fun book.

Incredible access was given and the result is fantastic
I love behind the scenes stories from Hollywood, and this is one of the absolute masterworks. The level of detail is a testament to the access that Solomon was given and she took advantage of that access brilliantly. The intensity and tension that she builds as she describes the second unit director’s obsession over getting the shot of a plane landing is a perfect encapsulation of the industry as a whole. I did not see the movie before reading this, and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who is curious about all the ways that movies can go wrong.

Seminal Behind the Scenes History
Great book
Puts you on a movie crew to suffer through the trillion decisions and complexities it takes to make a movie let alone on executed at the scale of Bonfire. Bravo to Brian DePalma for the courage to allow a journalist to record it all: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Only 3 Hours In…
And I am riveted. This thing is phenomenal fun and her voice is so cute in her naively intellectual way, like she’s discovering it all as she goes.

Excellent book, narration is fine
So many people up in arms in these reviews about the narrator. The author reads her riveting story, and after five minutes I was completely immersed. She doesn’t have the polish of a seasoned reader but I did not feel in any way that it negatively impacted the story to have her read it. Don’t miss this book, it’s excellent.
