Two men, each unaware of the other, share a common family secret: They were sold for adoption by their American father shortly after their births in the Philippines. Three alternating stories interweave the experiences of father Andrew Breszky and the two sons who try to connect and piece together the puzzle of their reckless, impulsive father. One lives in New York and the other grows up in the south of France, later traveling all over Asia as a documentary filmmaker. Both will discover that their relationships somehow echo that of the young man whose history eludes them.

Amazing, dark, intricate

This is a psychological novel in many ways. It also reminds me of novels written about the Marcos dictatorship(e.g. Dekada 70) and society’s ills. But it shows it in a new light, from the perspective of Filipino adoptees and the man who fathered them. It’s amazing when the stories intersect but characters barely touch. It is also a tragic novel.

The novel is written like poetry

Immersed in a labyrinth of haunting beauty and grotesque elegance, this mesmerizing tale unfolds like poetry in the darkest of nights. Each word a haunting melody, each page a dance with mystery.
