A diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is as disorienting as it is devastating. The Complete Guide for People with Parkinson's Disease and Their Loved Ones helps make sense of what comes next and what can be done, not just for those suffering from the disease, but for their family and friends as well. A trained nurse and primary caregiver for her mother, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, Lianna Marie draws upon more than 20 years of education, research, and direct experience. Written in straightforward and easily accessible language, this essential guide aims to help patients better understand their role in their treatment so that they may continue to lead happy and hopeful lives.
Topics covered include nutrition and exercise, alternative and complementary therapies, medication and treatment, and what caregivers can do to help. Written by an international expert on Parkinson's who has confronted the disease firsthand, The Complete Guide serves as the go-to book for comprehensive, easy-to-understand information for all Parkinson's patients and their loved ones.

Historia
Brain diseases are now the world's leading source of disability. The fastest growing of these is Parkinson's: the number of people with Parkinson's doubled to over six million over the last 25 years and is projected to double again by 2040. Harmful pesticides known to cause Parkinson's proliferate, many people remain undiagnosed and untreated, research funding stagnates, and the most effective treatment is now a half century old.

Historia
The author, Yuchi Yang, has been a registered dietitian for more than twenty years. She has been counseling patients with Parkinson’s on food and nutrition to optimize their health with diet. Levodopa (L-dopa) is the most commolny used medication to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Dietary protein can compete with L-dopa to cross the blood-brain barrier and decrease the efficacy of the drug. Such problem of protein and levodopa competition usually appears years after the initiation of L-dopa therapy.

While Parkinson’s Disease can be debilitating, there is plenty of compelling data to show that exercise is one of the best ways of managing PD symptoms. Studies show that regular exercise can improve gait, grip, balance, stability, strength, and motor control in the PD client. In addition, this improvement in movement and mobility helps to reduce falls, injuries, and various other complications of the disease in the PD client.

Historia
Despite being relatively unheard of, endometriosis affects an estimated one in 10 women worldwide. That's roughly 190 million people, and due to misdiagnosis, there's likely many more who are suffering without treatment. Getting a diagnosis of endometriosis can feel like a blessing and a curse. Knowing that you're not going crazy or blowing things out of proportion can be a huge relief. However, a diagnosis can also lead to feelings of isolation and discouragement - especially when you’re faced with treatment options that seem extreme. But don't despair - you aren't alone.

As a result, their symptoms improved by up to 70 percent with no obvious progression in the disease over the five years he worked with them. Yet there is still a lack of awareness about this valuable therapy amongst doctors and Parkinson’s nurses.

I randomly chose toisten to this book after a family member was diagnosed with PD. I previously had almost no knowledge of the disease and feel better equipped to help.
This book is thorough and informational; hope to refer back to it later.
