Now a New York Times bestseller

An unfathomable loss or an unthinkable crime? #1 New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag keeps you guessing in her most harrowing thriller yet.

When Detective Nick Fourcade enters the home of Genevieve Gauthier outside the sleepy town of Bayou Breaux, Louisiana, the bloody crime scene that awaits him is both the most brutal and the most confusing he's ever seen. Genevieve's seven-year-old son, KJ, has been murdered by an alleged intruder, yet Genevieve is alive and well. Meanwhile, Nick's wife, Detective Annie Broussard, sits with the grieving Genevieve. A mother herself, Annie understands the devastation this woman is going through, but as a detective she's troubled: Who would murder a child and leave the only witness behind?

When KJ's sometimes babysitter, twelve-year-old Nora Florette, is reported missing the very next day, the town fears a maniac is preying on their children. With pressure mounting from a tough, no-nonsense new sheriff, the media, and the parents of Bayou Breaux, Nick and Annie dig deep into the dual mysteries. Is someone from Genevieve's past or present responsible for the death of her son? Is Nora a victim, or something worse? Then everything changes when Genevieve’s past as a convicted criminal comes to light. Could she have killed her own child to free herself from the burden of motherhood, or is the loss of her beloved boy pushing her to the edge of insanity? Could she have something to do with the disappearance of Nora, or is the troubled teen the key to the murder? How far will Nick and Annie have to go to uncover the dark truth of the boy?

“[A] tightly plotted whodunnit . . . prepare to gasp."—People

“Thoughtful, character-driven . . . Hoag keeps the twists and turns coming all the way to the shocking conclusion.”—Publishers Weekly

“Hoag puts on quite the juggling act here, dazzling us with multiple theories about the boy’s murder, numerous potential suspects, and plot twists that keep us just slightly off-balance. A welcome return for a compelling investigative duo.”—Booklist

GREAT STORY!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'm not sure why some of the ratings were so critical of the cajun accent. I grew up on the Coast of Mississippi and spent quite a bit of time throughout Louisiana. I thought that Hillary Huber did a wonderful job of narration. Anyone that is familiar with the cajun accent should not let the bad reviews influence the purchase of this book. It's certainly not offensive. Actually, I never grew tired of listening to the voice of Hillary Huber. IMO, it's not overly performed. The depth of the story held my attention. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys suspense.

Good

For me I think it would have capitated my interest more if several people would have narrated the story. There are parts that seem to just drag, maybe because it feels like the same person is doing all this thinking in their head but it comes out of the same voice tone. The main male detective does grab you with his passion. The story does pull all the threads and characters to a good ending for the plot.

Mmm....?

3.5 stars rounded up to a 4. I’m glad this was a buddy read because I needed a sound board for this one. Parts were really good and added to a suspenseful mystery and then other parts just did not pan out. A surprising ending saved this one for me.

I want more!

Really enjoyed this book, going see if there are more with these characters. The narrator is really good, had to check at one point to see if it was more than one, nope just one with talent.

Tami Hoag at her best

It has been a while since I have read a Tami Hoag book. Her last few have just not kept my attention.

This one kept my attention to the point I made myself stay awake to finish the last 90 minutes.

When the new sheriff of a small town is called to a run down home, he is shocked to discover a child so brutally murdered, his deputy is in tears. His mother had tried to stop the intruder, but when he turned to attack her, she manages to escape to a neighbor's home. Who could have done such a horrible thing? Or should we say WHAT could have done this as the mother is convinced she saw something red with horns in the house. Was it one of the Bayou's mythical evil creatures?

When a second child, this time a girl doesn't come home, had she run away from the disfunctional home filled with caios and very little adult supervision as she had threatened often or had something also happened to her?

The new sheriff is not liked or respected by members of his department. Nor is he willing to involve any outside authorities.

Too many things just don't add up for a husband/wife deputy team. Too many events and people from the city which the new sheriff had just left are discovered, but how do they all fit together? And could they figure it all out before another life is taken?

This is a real who done it. But in the end, the question of why will shock every one.

Hope this becomes a series. Love the Cajun flare!
As we all know, things in South Louisiana aren't always as they seem.

Riveting!

This was my first listen to a Tami Hoag novel, and I'm in paradise because there are so many more to enjoy! I listened to this character-driven, modern whodunit in three big sessions.

In a small Louisiana bayou, the Sheriff's Department and the town are rife with the clash between the righteous, the evil-doers, the evil innocent and the innocent evil. When a young child is murdered, you won't quite see how vicious acts in the past mix with current secrets to explode into tragedy until the slow unfolding of a stunning reveal.

While The Boy is far from a phylosophical treatise, at the end, you're left with questions: What does it mean to be good? Are you evil if you do bad things? What defines a person? How do people define themselves?

Hillary Huber, the woman of a thousand voices, speaks rough and gentle Cajun, proper southern belle, twanging cop and young teen without ruffling a feather. She's one of the best narrators out there!

I thoroughly enjoyed not only the characters but also the pacing and layering of the narrative.

Avid audiobook aficionado

Ok listen. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and this is one of the best. Not just the story and plot but the narrator just nails it. Great accents and true to characters. It’s so good. I couldn’t wait to hear the next part of the story. Well done.

New to Tami

Gritty, slightly disturbing. Excellent insight into the characters emotions. A page turners for sure.
