The initial onslaught achieved significant territorial gains, but the French forces, under the command of General Philippe Pétain, held firm.

The French defense centered on the fortified city of Verdun, with its intricate network of underground tunnels, forts, and trenches. The Germans encountered fierce resistance as they attempted to advance, facing heavy casualties from the entrenched French defenders. Despite this, the German forces made incremental gains, capturing key positions such as Fort Douaumont and Fort Vaux.

However, the French army, bolstered by reinforcements and determined to protect their homeland, launched counteroffensives to reclaim lost territory. Good quick overview of the Battle. Could it have been more detailed? Yes, but then it wouldn't be a quick listen. It's just enough to make you decide to dig deeper or let it sit. Add this to your collection & listen a few times. Narration is choppy but tolerable.

A very brief and high level account of the battle

This is a brief description of the battle that lacks specifics or accounts from veterans or other sources. That’s fine if you only want an overview but it lacks the details for all of the pronouns and adverbs thrown around. There is no doubt that the Germans were “unrelenting” but what does that even mean? The performance is in very formal tone with long pauses between paragraphs. The result is choppy listening. If you speed it up to shorten the pauses the effect is amplified.
