Acerca de esta escucha
Among those who came with high hopes were author Pierre Berton's parents; here, he presents vividly written, firsthand accounts of the gunfights, con men, avalanches, frostbite, and starvation people endured. It is an amazing and unforgettable true story of superhuman challenges, death-defying adventure, and lifelong friendships.

The fully rounded person who emerges from this captivating portrait is uncomfortable with words, shy with women, totally at home in the outdoors, and deeply in love with the country he helped found.

A riveting true account of gold rush fever in mid-19th-century America, rich with the thrilling exploits of daring fortune seekers and dangerous outlaws. America was never the same after January 24, 1848. Historia
It is the last decade of the 19th century. The Wild West has been tamed and its fierce, independent and often violent larger-than-life figures – gun-toting wanderers, trappers, prospectors, Indian fighters, cowboys, and lawmen –are now victims of their own success. They are heroes who’ve outlived their usefulness.

Historia
Between 1896 and 1899, thousands of people lured by gold braved a grueling journey into the remote wilderness of North America. Within two years, Dawson City, in the Canadian Yukon, grew from a mining camp of four hundred to a raucous town of more than thirty thousand. The stampede to the Klondike was the last great gold rush in history. Scurvy, dysentery, frostbite, and starvation stalked all who dared to be in Dawson. And yet the possibilities attracted people from all walks of life.

Historia
Based on a true story originally written by one of the survivors, Neta Lohnes Frazier's account of seven children traveling westward still has the power to astonish. In the 1840s, the Sager family set off on the Oregon Trail, a dangerous and adventure-filled journey. Tragedy struck when both the mother and father succumbed to fever, orphaning the youngsters - one just a newborn. The entire wagon train adopted them, until they arrived at the Whitman Mission in Oregon.

Poorly written and poorly narrated.
The author overuses superlatives to such an extent that one doubts his credibility. The narrator sounds like guy hosting a reality TV show. This is a great subject that is not given it's due.

Could have been much better
This book has OK information, but doesn't tell it in a very storylike manner. For example, it never really gets in to the miners lives or about the actual mining! The pre-stampede narrative is good though.
The narrators emphasis is all wrong and sounds somewhat condescending and is dramatic at all the wrong times.
Surely there are better choices.
