Engrossing Listen

I loved reading this series when it came out, and am loving listening to it now. Highly recommend.

I took off one star for the performance because the "sound effects" can be both intrusive and annoying. I started listening while driving my car, and more than once I thought the ambient noise from my audio was a problem with my car.

Excellent book

Excellent book and story. Narration is good but some of the sound effects made it hard to hear in certain areas. Also not being able to skip the adds for other books midway through and at the beginning was annoying.

I love this series and almost all Elizabeth Moon books. I have probably read this space series at least 15 times and still have the actual books on my shelf. So thrilled to see them available on Audible finally!!
BUT
I listen to the books while I work on the farm, drive, walk, whenever I am alone. The voices are super BUT the sound effects/score are SO DISTRACTING!!! I constantly have to pause the story and/or remove the ear hanger to see if that running water sound is the car leaking something or I forgot to turn off the hose or something wrong in the furnace room. Are the beeping noises from an electronic low battery or the fridge door left open? Is the bird scream a hawk after my favorite chicken? Is the train sound a USP truck on the gravel drive??? Etcetera, Etcetera. Etcetera!!
Please give purchaser the option when we buy the book! Let us choose, individual reader, voices performing the book or the full meal deal....voices, a reader when called for AND sound effects and score!!!
Once that happens, a SUPER book and series and author!!! however you like it presented!

I loved the sound effects.

I love the idea and effort to help the visualization of the story. However, at many points the sound effects are way too loud and the narration cannot be heard. I suggest the sound should stay in the background.
