Acerca de esta escucha
South of the Border, West of the Sun is the beguiling story of a past rekindled, and one of Haruki Murakami’s most touching novels.
Hajime has arrived at middle age with a loving family and an enviable career, yet he feels incomplete. When a childhood friend, now a beautiful woman, shows up with a secret from which she is unable to escape, the fault lines of doubt in Hajime’s quotidian existence begin to give way. Rich, mysterious, and quietly dazzling, in South of the Border, West of the Sun the simple arc of one man’s life becomes the exquisite literary terrain of Murakami’s remarkable genius.

Historia
K is madly in love with his best friend, Sumire, but her devotion to a writerly life precludes her from any personal commitments. At least, that is, until she meets an older woman to whom she finds herself irresistibly drawn. When Sumire disappears from an island off the coast of Greece, K is solicited to join the search party—and finds himself drawn back into her world and beset by ominous visions. Subtle and haunting, Sputnik Sweetheart is a profound meditation on human longing.

Across two parallel narratives, Murakami draws listeners into a mind-bending universe in which Lauren Bacall, Bob Dylan, a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters collide to dazzling effect. What emerges is a novel that is at once hilariously funny and a deeply serious meditation on the nature and uses of the mind.

Historia
In the spring of 1978, a young Haruki Murakami sat down at his kitchen table and began to write. The result: two remarkable short novels—Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973—that launched the career of one of the most acclaimed authors of our time. These powerful, at times surreal, works about two young men coming of age—the unnamed narrator and his friend the Rat—are stories of loneliness, obsession, and eroticism. They bear all the hallmarks of Murakami’s later books, and form the first two-thirds, with A Wild Sheep Chase, of the trilogy of the Rat.

Here is a short, sleek novel of encounters, set in Tokyo during the witching hours between midnight and dawn, and every bit as gripping as Haruki Murakami's masterworks The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore. At its center are two sisters: Eri, a fashion model slumbering her way into oblivion, and Mari, a young student soon led from solitary reading at an anonymous Denny's toward people whose lives are radically different from her own.

With the same deadpan mania and genius for dislocation that he brought to his internationally acclaimed novels A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Haruki Murakami makes this collection of stories a determined assault on the normal. A man sees his favorite elephant vanish into thin air; a newlywed couple suffers attacks of hunger that drive them to hold up a McDonald's in the middle of the night; and a young woman discovers that she has become irresistible to a little green monster who burrows up through her backyard.

The six stories in Haruki Murakami’s mesmerizing collection are set at the time of the catastrophic 1995 Kobe earthquake, when Japan became brutally aware of the fragility of its daily existence. But the upheavals that afflict Murakami’s characters are even deeper and more mysterious, emanating from a place where the human meets the inhuman.

Historia
Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are lovesick doctors, students, ex-boyfriends, actors, bartenders, and even Kafka’s Gregor Samsa, brought together to tell stories that speak to us all. In Men Without Women, Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic, marked by the same wry humor and pathos that have defined his entire body of work.

From the internationally acclaimed Haruki Murakami comes a mind-bending new collection of short stories, all touching beautifully on love and solitude, childhood and memory...all with a signature Murakami twist. The eight stories in this new book are all told in the first person by a classic Murakami narrator. From memories of youth, meditations on music, and an ardent love of baseball, to dreamlike scenarios and invented jazz albums, together these stories challenge the boundaries between our minds and the exterior world.

One of Soseki's most beloved works of fiction, the novel depicts the 23-year-old Sanshiro leaving the sleepy countryside for the first time in his life to experience the constantly moving 'real world' of Tokyo, its women and university. In the subtle tension between our appreciation of Soseki's lively humour and our awareness of Sanshiro's doomed innocence, the novel comes to life. Sanshiro is also penetrating social and cultural commentary.

At 31, Noah Calhoun, back in coastal North Carolina after World War II, is haunted by images of the girl he lost more than a decade earlier.

A man sees his favorite elephant vanish into thin air; a newlywed couple suffers attacks of hunger that drive them to hold up a McDonald's in the middle of the night; and a young woman discovers that she has become irresistible to a little green monster who burrows up through her backyard.

Interesting relationships, bland voice-acting
The story of this is just about an average Japanese male going through the tedium of life, like many Murakami novels. Like many Murakami novels, this man falls in love with a woman, to the point of obsession, however, he's married and has two children. The rest of the book revolves around this and how this obsession affects and changes his life, maybe for the better?
I really enjoyed the book, I think that it is very dry, for a Murakami book, but the length makes up for it. The relationships and how these relationships reflect upon the protagonist are maybe the most interesting part of the book. If you've ever read Murakami before, you know many of his protagonists are typically the silent, stoic, yet self-absorbed type. This is still the case in South of the Border, but Murakami reflects on this character-type and analyses how these kind of people actually work in the world, as well as how they affect the people around them, maybe for the worse?
The narration is alright, it's very bland, but kind of plays into the monotony of the protagonist's life. It doesn't make it that easy to listen to, unfortunately.
Overall, good Murakami in its shortest form.

Same World
Haruki Murakami has this unique gift at putting the reader in the same world in each book. Whenever I start reading any of his books, I'm instantly transported in the same place where I left off in a different story. If you are not a fan of this author, you won't understand at what I'm talking about. All of his books has a similar theme to them. The characters might be named differently, but they all follow the same path of metaphors.
"South of the Border, West of the Sun" is one of the best short novels that I've read from Haruki Murakami. It's hard to explain how I feel about this book because Murakami is one of my favorite authors that I enjoy reading. This book might be better than his well known titles because it's well put together with perfect tone.
Referencing South of the Boarder from Nat King Cole is something that you expect from his author. His books are almost like poetry.

A bit disappointed
I chose this novel because it had good reviews and was written by an author from, and took place in a world far from mine. As it turns out, my mom who is a few months younger than the main character and grew up in Montana, is way more exotic and interisting as a person.

One of the weaker Murakami novels
I’ve read about 90% of murakami’s works including his non-fiction and short stories. This work doesn’t go anywhere fast and as much as Murakami uses mood to create story- it doesn’t work when it’s 85% aesthetic and 15% plot movement.
The main character is unlikeable and the ending is rushed- no real character development to speak of.
I love Murakami, he’s still my favorite author but his mechanics are unrecognizable to me here.

My first Murakami, I'm amazed
listened it to completion when driving back to the city, was completely immersed and addicted to it. just stood in the kitchen for 15 minutes till it ended, so enthralled and needing to see the ending
