The vivid imagery Edwards used reportedly made some of those who heard it tremble and cry out for mercy.
It is an important piece of American Literature, even for those those who totally disagree with the author's view of God as vengeful, angry and a bit cruel.

Old fashioned but good
Grammer, bad cadence and accents on certain words sound a little odd, "old-fashioned," as it were, which gives the thing a sense of authenticity. And the narrator has an amazing, deep, almost gutteral voice. The whole effect is to draw you back to another time and place.
