Historia
When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Historia
Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists beyond the airport.

Historia
Bright Rivers chronicles the angling passions and frustrations of one of fly-fishing's greatest men of letters. A city dweller trapped in the complexities of modern life, Nick Lyons has always found solace in his pilgrimages to great rivers. It is there that he fishes for trout, and in Bright Rivers, Lyons recounts the sometimes moving, sometimes hilarious experiences of his expeditions to the Delaware, Beaverkill, Madison, Big Hole, and Yellowstone rivers, sharing reminiscences of trout taken, released, and sometimes lost.

Historia
In these stories, popular Chicago Tribune outdoor columnist Bill Stokes gives himself over to his true passion, trout fishing. It is an activity, possibly a madness, that moves him, time and again, to stand knee-deep in cold and murky waters, offer himself up to clouds of hungry mosquitoes, and attempt to keep from snagging his line in overhanging limbs while trying to outwit a wily rainbow or brook trout. And then remembering where the car is parked.

Historia
Jack Walker and Michael Talbot come from two worlds; the same, yet different. They both find themselves transported into an alien one, where things aren’t as they seem. While it appears similar to the ones they come from, there are some terrifying differences. Is it a dream? Or has reality been somehow warped? Jack comes from a world filled with nocturnal creatures that were once human, but now seek to destroy the last vestiges of humanity.

Historia
On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused. Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day.

Dylan Tomine takes us to the far reaches of the planet in search of fish and adventure, with keen insight, a strong stomach, and plenty of laughs along the way. Closer to home, he wades deeper into his beloved steelhead rivers of the Pacific Northwest and the politics of saving them. Tomine celebrates the joy - and pain - of exploration, fatherhood, and the comforts of home waters from a vantage point well off the beaten path. Headwaters traces the evolution of a lifelong angler’s priorities from fishing to the survival of the fish themselves.

After all her preparation, after all the careful management of her team, and after their running so well for over a week, the huskies balked. Outstanding Review!!
Would you listen to Short Stories: Volume 1 again? Why?
Yes. It sure held our attention and kept us engaged!!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Short Stories: Volume 1?
Loved all of the stories because they are about nature and so spot on. What great experiences and made us feel we were right there with him.
What does R. Paul Matty bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Engages readers with his good diction, expression and sense of humor! You could really visualize each story and what was happening.
If you could take any character from Short Stories: Volume 1 out to dinner, who would it be and why?
We would take Paul out to dinner or better yet, we would cook for him. We listened on road trips and did not want to turn it off! We wanted to hear the "rest of the story". Each story was great in its own way with his spiritual and ecological wisdom!
Any additional comments?
Share these stories with the hearing impaired who were outdoors men and women at one time! Nursing homes would be a great place to start! People would love to hear them!!

Exceptional Writing and Narration!!
Would you consider the audio edition of Short Stories: Volume 1 to be better than the print version?
Absolutely! These insightful stories are extremely well written and narrated with a heartfelt eloquent discourse. With deft intensity and unerring ear, he explores the mystery of nature and the outdoors that is very rare in today's world. By tapping into the spiritual wisdom of the Earth, we evoke a profound sense of belonging with the natural world and cultivate our inner wonder and joy.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Short Stories: Volume 1?
The "Lion" story really touched my heart and soul of a rare siting that I have experienced myself. It does everything a story is supposed to and leaves you inspired at the end. By opening our minds, hearts, and senses we can consciously awaken to the ecological knowledge of the wild, the rhythms of nature, and the profound spiritual wisdom of the Earth.
What about R. Paul Matty’s performance did you like?
His exceptional observations of the natural world are rare today. I love the spiritual wisdom, ecological comprehension and contagious love of nature that Paul expresses in his writings, much like riffs coming together at all the right times!! His intellect and curiosity is unlimited as he takes people into a place that so few people know. It is a wonderful breath of fresh air in this day and age where so few people are connecting to nature!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
These stories have kept me on the edge of my seat, as the words are very expressive and passionate. His prose is incredibly visual!! I could see myself there and feel all of the emotions. I especially liked the “Lion” and the rare moment of a majestic animal crossing his path.
Any additional comments?
Paul’s true short stories are insightful, engaging and beautifully descriptive. His writing reminds me of Hemingway ~ simple, direct and unique. His Love and deep connection of nature is expressed throughout his stories. We humans are capable of great wonder and love for nature however, coming to understand and appreciate nature takes time and exposure of which many of us are not taking the time to appreciate or understand it. Paul Matty inspires us to deeply connect to nature like exploring a whole new prayer book as we are immersed in real world experiences seeing ourselves as part of one huge, magnificent web of life.
