Acerca de esta escucha
The classic compilation of psychological case studies from a master clinician and lyrical writer
Each generation of therapists can boast of only a few writers like Deborah Luepnitz, whose sympathy and wit shine in her fine, luminous prose. In Schopenhauer's Porcupines, she recounts five true stories from her practice, stories of patients who range from the super-rich to the destitute, who grapple with panic attacks, psychosomatic illness, marital despair, and sexual recklessness. Intimate, original, and triumphantly funny, Schopenhauer's Porcupines goes further than any other book in illuminating "how talking helps".

Josef Breuer, one of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, is at the height of his career. Friedrich Nietzsche, Europe's greatest philosopher, is on the brink of suicidal despair, unable to find a cure for the headaches and other ailments that plague him. When he agrees to treat Nietzsche with his experimental "talking cure", Breuer never expects that he, too, will find solace in their sessions. Only through facing his own inner demons can the gifted healer begin to help his patient.

“The word ‘love’ is most often defined as a noun, yet we would all love better if we used it as a verb,” writes bell hooks as she comes out fighting and on fire in All About Love. Here, at her most provocative and intensely personal, renowned scholar, cultural critic and feminist bell hooks offers a proactive new ethic for a society bereft with lovelessness--not the lack of romance, but the lack of care, compassion, and unity. People are divided, she declares, by society’s failure to provide a model for learning to love.

Maroda asserts that an enduring blind spot arises from clinicians' ongoing need to deny what they are personally seeking from the analytic process, including the need to rescue and be rescued. She equally seeks to remove the guilt and shame associated with these motivations, encouraging clinicians to embrace both their own humanity and their patients', rather than seeking to transcend them. Maroda confronts the analyst's tendencies to favor harmony over conflict, passivity over active interventions, and viewing the patient as an infant rather than an adult.

By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war.

The late Carl Rogers, founder of the humanistic psychology movement, revolutionized psychotherapy with his concept of "client-centered therapy." His influence has spanned decades, but that influence has become so much a part of mainstream psychology that the ingenious nature of his work has almost been forgotten. With a new introduction by Peter Kramer, this landmark book is a classic in its field and a must-listen for anyone interested in clinical psychology or personal growth.

Irvin D. Yalom has made a career of investigating the lives of others. In this profound memoir, he turns his writing and his therapeutic eye on himself. He opens his story with a nightmare: He is 12 and is riding his bike past the home of an acne-scarred girl. Like every morning, he calls out, hoping to befriend her, "Hello Measles!" But in his dream, the girl's father makes Yalom understand that his daily greeting had hurt her. For Yalom, this was the birth of empathy; he would not forget the lesson.

This series of 28 lectures was given by Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), the founder of psychoanalysis, during the First World War and first published in English in 1920. The purpose of this general introduction was to present his work and ideas - as they had matured at that point - to a general public; and even though there was to be considerable development and change over the ensuing years, these talks still offer a valuable and remarkably approachable entry point to his revolutionary concepts.

Family defined the cultural identity of Prachi and her brother, Yush, connecting them to a larger Indian American community amid white suburbia. But their belonging was predicated on a powerful myth: the idea that Asian Americans, and Indian Americans in particular, have perfected the alchemy of middle-class life, raising tight-knit, high-achieving families that are immune to hardship. Molding oneself to fit this image often comes at a steep, but hidden, cost.

Most Christians are familiar with the opening words of Genesis: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” But push beyond those iconic words, and sometimes the details get a little hazy. And strange. God walked around in a garden? Eve was made from Adam’s rib? A talking serpent? And what the in the world were the “Nephilim”? In The Characters of Creation, Daniel Darling re-introduces listeners to the story they thought they knew.

Historia
In this gripping historical memoir, journalist and famed redwood activist Greg King examines how investors and a growing U.S. economy drove the timber industry to cut down all but 4 percent of the original two-million-acre redwood ecosystem. King first examined redwood logging in the 1980s—as an award-winning reporter. What he found in the woods convinced him to leap the line of neutrality and become an activist dedicated to saving the very last ancient redwood groves remaining in private hands.

A great reading of a great book
What a great listen! I read and loved this wonderful book about psychotherapy many years ago. But listening to the author reading it aloud brings a wonderful new dimension to it. Luepnitz does a really lovely job of bringing her patients to life with skillful voice acting, which in turn brings a dramatic energy to the more theoretical passages. This is a rich, substantive, and entertaining book.

Accessible to all
Shopenhauer's Porcupines makes talk therapy easy for the lay person to understand. The author tells the stories of five patients, and explains how transference occurs and is used to heal wounds of the past. Pretty fascinating stuff.

Excellent case studies
A lovely book with great case studies and a masterful command of history. I loved the narration with the exception of some of the accents (which were a little painful). A must read for any future therapist or anyone who enjoyed therapeutic inspiration.

Enjoyable and informative
This is an engaging look at the work of psychoanalysis. Over the course of five case studies, the author introduces basic psychoanalytic concepts and shows how these apply to her patients’ situations. Luepnitz has a warm, personal tone as a narrator and explains each stage of analysis in language that the average person can understand. Unlike some, I thought the narrator’s use of different accents added clarity (since several stories involve multiple patients) and sometimes a touch of humor. A good read for anyone interested in Freudian analysis or the problems of human intimacy.

Entertaining and informative!
I love listening to books read by their author! It helps me feel connected with the author and know that the emphasis is intended on since it is the author. This book was certainly no different and I think Dr. Luepnitz did an amazing job narrating the stories and making me feel like I was brought into her therapy office. I was immersed. I am also a clinical Psychology student, so I found the content very applicable and helped me think through my own cases.

Engrossing listen
I'm a psychiatry resident and first heard about this book at a talk by Nancy McWilliams who recommended it. I enjoyed the how the author melded the intellectual curiosity and humanity that's characteristic of good therapy in her stories. She did a great job of bringing her patient encounters to life with her fantastic narration.
