A gripping, radically intimate debut novel about a group of enslaved women staging a covert rebellion against their owners

On a struggling Texas plantation, six enslaved women slip from their sleeping quarters and gather in the woods under the cover of night. The Lucys—as they call the plantation owners, after Lucifer himself—have decided to turn around the farm’s bleak financial prospects by making the women bear children. They have hired a “stockman” to impregnate them. But the women are determined to protect themselves.

Now each of the six faces a choice. Nan, the doctoring woman, has brought a sack of cotton root clippings that can stave off children when chewed daily. If they all take part, the Lucys may give up and send the stockman away. But a pregnancy for any of them will only encourage the Lucys further. And should their plan be discovered, the consequences will be severe.

Visceral and arresting, Night Wherever We Go illuminates each woman’s individual trials and desires while painting a subversive portrait of collective defiance. Unflinching in her portrayal of America’s gravest injustices, while also deeply attentive to the transcendence, love, and solidarity of women whose interior lives have been underexplored, Tracey Rose Peyton creates a story of unforgettable power.

The historical content of how king Black woman have healed themselves in the mist of a world trying to kill them- amazing read!

This was an amazing read- it spoke to the savages of people who tried their best to oppress black women’s womb but were outwitted by the very woman they believed were less than! Karma is always great also per the end of the story!

Stunning in every way

This audiobook is flawless. Not only is the story’s perspective original and deeply thoughtful, the narrative is woven with pure grace. I’ve never read anything like it… Congratulations also to the reader who has an extraordinary command of voice and tempo—creating dozens of believable characters across divisions of race, age, and social class. I was sorry this book ended.

Captivating

Interesting from beginning to end. The writing and narration give listeners a very clear, vivid picture that makes you feel you are right there. Excellent character development and story telling. This story is tragic and fascinating.

I wanted more

This book captured me from the very beginning. I appreciated the respect she gave to the women in the story. There are just enough details to understand the storyline, but not so graphic to make me cringe. I felt the book ended a tad short as there was an opportunity to expand on the final wrap-up. I learned a bit more about the struggles of how slaves were treated. I want to hear more books narrated by Karen Chilton and look forward to another book by Tracey Rose Peyton.

Stellar

I’m sitting here…stuck. Stuck by the story, the writing, the ending. What a powerful story.

Phenomenal✨✨✨✨✨

I haven’t been roped in like this in a long time. Tracey has hooked me on to a new genre and I’m here for it. The character’s development, the unity, the love, the rebellion all nurtured perfectly. The humans of enslavement can actually have a faceted narrative —one not just of fearful sorrow but one of true source and power…

A story that didn’t seem to find a direction

I was excited about this book when I started it. When the story ended I had to go back to the make sure I hadn’t skipped any chapters. Just kind of leaves the characters hanging through out the story and even in the end.

Believable!

This book written about Texas and the reality of Jim Crow let’s you know why many historical novels are banded in Texas today. Who wants to know how ignorant and brutal their ancestors were? Who wants to admit that many enslaved were starved, beaten. and killed for sport and entertainment. Sadly this story is believable.
