"Natchez Burning" - wie ein Schwelbrand lasten Jahrzehnte zurückliegende rassistische Gewaltverbrechen auf Natchez, Mississippi. Wieder entfacht wird er durch einen neuen Mord. Eine afroamerikanische Arzthelferin, damals der Gewalt entflohenes Opfer, wird kurz nach ihrer Rückkehr in dem Ort tot aufgefunden. Ausgerechnet der Vater des amtierenden Bürgermeisters gerät in Verdacht, damals wie heute eine Rolle bei den Verbrechen gespielt zu haben.
So der Ausgangspunkt des Thrillers, der den Hörer 32 Stunden und 28 Minuten durch eine Welt führt, in der Geheimnisse ans Tageslicht geraten, die bis in die höchsten Ebenen der Politik hineinspielen.
Erfolgsautor Greg Iles hat seinen großen Krimi in der Kleinstadt angesiedelt, in der er selbst aufwuchs und sich daher sehr gut auskennt - beste Voraussetzungen also für lebendiges Kopfkino.
Uve Teschner, als Hörbuchsprecher ein Spezialist auf seinem Gebiet, schürt mit seiner Erzählkunst zusätzlich das Feuer und hält den Hörer von der ersten bis zur letzten Minute in Atem.
