When mystery novelist Hazel Martin receives a secretive letter from an old friend who suspects her relatives have murderous intentions, she packs her bags and heads to the country.

Tampered medications, symptoms of poisoning, and suspicious accidents all add up to attempted murder, and it's up to Hazel and her Siamese cat, Dickens, to sniff out the clues. But with a house full of relatives who all have motives, will Hazel be able to unmask the culprit before things turn deadly?

USA Today best-selling author Leighann Dobbs brings back the spirit of the golden age of mysteries in this classic whodunit set in the 1920s.

I would recommend this for someone looking for a cozy mystery in a historic setting with appealing characters. The narration was quite good as well. The mystery is less of a focus; more appealing for the Jazz age country house setting.

Enjoyable cozy mystery.

I don’t know if it was the story or the narrator.
It just couldn’t hold my attention.
I think the basic plot was good, but the story was boring.

Any additional comments?

This was a mildly enjoyable novel of the type I enjoy. The story was good, but the dialog was out of sync at times with a 1920's English country house. I found it jarring. There are others, such as the Royal Spyness or Daisy Dalrymple, that I enjoy very much. This was a shade off.

Modern dialog in a period novel

Character development was a bit lacking - I had to memorize the names of the characters to remember who was who. And lots of questions that did not move the plot forward: Who shot the arrow in the woods? Could it have been a, b, c, d? And which path did they take, left, right, center? I just thought all these mental questions from the protagonist really slowed everything down, as if we could not run through the possibilities on our own.

Not great

I needed a fluffy light book after something long and heavy. This was just what I was looking for. And also it was free as part of audible plus. That made it perfect.

Fluffy light and exactly what I needed.

If you are looking for something light and entertaining, this might be it. I was unfamiliar with Leighann Dobbs, the author, so got this based on some good reviews.

Hazel Martin is a widow and writer of mystery novels. Her elderly friend (very wealthy, naturally) seeks her help in trying to figure out who among the relatives who stand to inherit her money might be trying to get her out of the way prematurely.

The book is not heavy-weight reading (listening) but it does summon up some of the fun from the classic “between the wars” British mysteries. Hazel uses her experiences as a writer, thinking what her detectives would do, to help her find the clues she needs. She has a cat named Dickens who has accompanied her to this house. And it turns out that she knows the inspector, who of course values her assessment of the case.

A nice little cozy and a decent mystery—plenty of clues for the listener to keep up with. Recommend.
