Acerca de esta escucha

Two of her four kids may be out of the nest, but Lucy Stone knows only too well that mothering is a lifetime commitment. At least that commitment means she gets to kick back and enjoy a fancy Mother's Day brunch - that is, before the festivities are interrupted by a nasty scene between two moms feuding over the popularity of their teenage daughters. Even after witnessing that scene, though, Lucy never expects to see actual blood spilled. But when one of the moms is found dead at the tennis court, Lucy begins to unravel the mystery and comes face-to-face with a killer who has a thing or two to learn about motherly love.

Entertaining

I love Lucy Stone and friends. Each book has been fresh and imaginative. This one was no different. I look forward to listening to the next one.

Not my favorite

I've been making my way through this series and mostly enjoy them, but this one became really irritating with its heavy left-leaning agenda. I don't read fiction to get the author's viewpoint on various social issues shoved down my throat and this series has a tendency to do that at times. This was one of the worst with its pointed pro-choice and pro-gun control rhetoric. Also, trigger warning for those who don't like to read about minors being kidnapped or murdered.

That said, I read these for the small-town flavor and quirky characters and Lucy's interaction with her family. I'd like to know when Toby got married. You'd think it would have been mentioned, since he's Lucy's eldest and we got a whole book about the wedding of her best friend's daughter.

One last thing, this seems to be at least partially based on or inspired by a real-life murder that occurred. Not sure how I feel about that, especially since the author doesn't even acknowledge it anywhere. But there are too many similarities to be coincidental. Changes are made to the motive, of course, since it wouldn't have fit in with the author's liberal agenda. (Search Juliet Hulme murder, if curious.)

I'll give the series another chance, but I hope it doesn't continue in this vein.

If you like stereotypes, this is the book for you.

What disappointed you about Mother's Day Murder?

The author is clearly a liberal with a grudge against conservatives. The two main characters are a Democrat who has a perfect marriage and a house with grass in the roof. She supports abortion rights and a book about 'Two Mommies.' The Accused killer is a Republican who's 'Gun Woman of the Year'. Her husband is a skirt chaser and she has shellacked hair and conservative suits. The two women nearly get in a fight over a newspaper. Ridiculous premise.
I've read all of these books but this will be the last. Lucy is just learning about texting and her daughter has a MySpace page. I'm hoping the book was released years ago and only now on audio. It's incredibly dated.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not this series

What does Karen White bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She does a good job. I enjoyed her reading of the book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Ridiculousness...stereotypes bound.
