Acerca de esta escucha
In this book, Katrina Hazzard-Donald explores African Americans' experience and practice of the herbal, healing folk belief tradition known as Hoodoo. Working against conventional scholarship, Hazzard-Donald argues that Hoodoo emerged first in three distinct regions she calls "regional Hoodoo clusters" and that after the turn of the 19th century, Hoodoo took on a national rather than regional profile. The first interdisciplinary examination to incorporate a full glossary of Hoodoo culture, Mojo Workin': The Old African American Hoodoo System lays out the movement of Hoodoo against a series of watershed changes in the American cultural landscape.
Throughout, Hazzard-Donald distinguishes between "Old tradition Black Belt Hoodoo" and commercially marketed forms that have been controlled, modified, and often fabricated by outsiders; this study focuses on the hidden system operating almost exclusively among African Americans in the Black spiritual underground.
The book is published by University of Illinois Press.

Are you looking for magic spells that actually work? Hoodoo is old North American folk magic, born from African spiritual traditions brought over by slaves. Over the centuries it incorporated Native American and European influences, using what worked and discarding what did not. This process has made Hoodoo into an adaptable, powerful magical system that works. This audiobook covers everything you need to know to get started with Hoodoo, and includes over 25 simple spells to draw money to you, bring luck and love into your life, and protect yourself from evil.

Historia
In Mules and Men, some of the rich cultural heritage of black America is revealed and preserved. In the 1930s, Zora Neale Hurston returned to her home town of Eatonville, Florida, to collect and record the oral histories, songs, and sermons, many dating back to slavery times, that she remembered hearing as a child. These highly metaphorical folktales, "big old lies", and powerful songs helped her to recover her history, and preserve an important part of American culture.

This explanation of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, demonstrates clearly and powerfully that the opposite is true. The Bible remains profoundly relevant - both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. It is the greatest moral guide and source of wisdom ever written.

America Bewitched is the first major history of witchcraft in America - from the Salem witch trials of 1692 to the present day. The infamous Salem trials are etched into the consciousness of modern America, the human toll a reminder of the dangers of intolerance and persecution. The refrain 'Remember Salem!' was invoked frequently over the ensuing centuries. As time passed, the trials became a milepost measuring the distance America had progressed from its colonial past, its victims now the righteous and their persecutors the shamed.

Historia
This is the story of Santa Muerte, the so-called cult of crisis, a red-hot combo of a kermesse (Mexican carnival), Catholicism and New Age; a hedonist practice but involving bodily sacrifice too. It is an expression of economic, psychological and social forces, bigger than perhaps any of her acolytes suspect. This book looks at the folk saint and the manner in which her cult grew. You will learn about Santa Muerte like never before.

Historia
Riane Eisler believes that war and the "war of the sexes" are concepts neither divinely nor biologically ordained. Join the author as she reconstructs a prehistoric culture based on partnership rather than domination and traces the roots of the global shift to patriarchy. Eisler, an acclaimed scholar, futurist, and activist, also presents new scripts for living based on a more socially, economically, ecologically, personally, and spiritually balanced society. This script is in direct opposition to the tension and violence typical of what she calls the dominator model. Her vision is the partnership model, which today is struggling to reemerge. This program is an important contribution to that struggle.

Historia
In March 1997, 39 people in Rancho Santa Fe, California, ritually terminated their lives. To outsiders, it was a mass suicide. To insiders, it was a graduation. Benjamin Zeller not only explores the question of why the members of Heaven's Gate committed ritual suicides, but interrogates the origin and evolution of the religion, its appeal, and its practices. By tracking the development of the history, social structure, and worldview of Heaven's Gate, Zeller shows that the movement was both a reflection and a microcosm of larger American culture.

Spanning more than 200 years, An African American and Latinx History of the United States is a revolutionary, politically charged narrative history arguing that the "Global South" was crucial to the development of America as we know it. Ortiz challenges the notion of westward progress, and shows how placing African American, Latinx, and Indigenous voices unapologetically front and center transforms American history into the story of the working class organizing against imperialism.

Conventional wisdom holds that Africans are only a recent presence in Europe. But in African Europeans, renowned historian Olivette Otele debunks this and uncovers a long history of Europeans of African descent. From the third century, when the Egyptian Saint Maurice became the leader of a Roman legion, all the way up to the present, Otele explores encounters between those defined as "Africans" and those called "Europeans."

African Founders explores the little-known history of how enslaved people from different regions of Africa interacted with colonists of European origins to create new regional cultures in the colonial United States. The Africans brought with them linguistic skills, novel techniques of animal husbandry and farming, and generations-old ethical principles, among other attributes. This startling history reveals how much our country was shaped by these African influences in its early years, producing a new distinctly American culture.

Great research, no rites or spells though❗️😣
This was a great scholarly research on the origins of the Hoodoo discipline. I must say I was hoping that it had actual rites or something specific for use. Since I started out learning from Lucky Mojo I was surprised by the this author being at odds against them. It was definitely a great read for insight on the history and how things became the way they are.
Dr. Katrina Hazzard-Donald brought up some good points of reference and I really appreciate the research that has gone in to this work. I would have like led to have had more insights in the craft itself. I did grow up in the black belt area of the south east and so a lot of this resonated.

So much good information.
Love love love this book. There is so much good information and historical references. I really could relate to some examples. Other things were completely new to me. The one thing that distracted me was the readers mispronunciation of the African Orishas and tribes. Otherwise this was a great book.

more books about hoodo and atr By black writers!!
we need more books about atr non fiction by black writers. please. there is so much detail in here about american history that was convoniently brushed off and never mentioned. like hoodoo was the begining and end and catoloist for slave rebelions. there should have been a chapter in our txt books about slave rebelions but i am learning about them now. right now. what a peice of our countries history to blow off. 2. im blown away at thinking about how black people used hoodoo to litterally get by. our ansestors had nothing. im astounded at how little resourses freed people had ...its a new perspective of my people THRIVED AND SERVIVED in the earlier times of this country. the point of this books is they had power foundation in faith and their aincent religion. amazing. black people are amazing.

AWESOME!
Everyone who ever thinks about indulging in Hoodoo should read this . Hoodoo serves as an historic memoire in how our enslaved ancestors dealt with and engaged with the world around them; There is NOTHING in Hoodoo that can be discussed, taught , or performed without African enslaved; I was able to help my Dad understand my Grandfathers beliefs & how and & why he practiced Hoodoo ; This information has helped him tremendously especially due to the fear that was instilled African American community as far as our beliefs and spirituality

Very Thorough Research
You can tell that a lot of effort was put into writing this book. The facts AND the hypothesis were presented very well. My only gripe is that there were a few instances where the editing was lacking, leading to a bit of repetitive line delivery.
