For one minor example, upon hearing of several horse thieves in the area he had all of the tails cut off of his horses so that they would be easily identifiable-thus preventing what would have been surely the loss of livestock.
From the Indian-wars, to ranch life, and above all the grizzly hunts, Stevens tells us how it was, with tongue-in-cheek humor and truth that is often stranger than fiction. Maybe the best book I have ever read!
Imagine if Sherlock Holmes gave up crime and moved to the old west frontier of New Mexico and became a ranchman and grizzly hunter. That is Montague Stevens. He absolutely brilliant.
Glad to see this on audible as I absolutely love this book, the virtual voice is easy to listen to, but it makes a few mistakes here and there.
Would highly recommend to anyone interested in the true west, as well as anyone interested in hounds, horses and hunting. Includes many great stories of frontier life, not just bear hunting.
