Acerca de esta escucha

From seven-time Spur Award winner Elmer Kelton comes a riveting tale befitting the Western Writers of America’s Greatest Western Writer of all time.

When Comanches slaughter his parents in 1855 West Texas, eight-year-old Jeff buries their scalped bodies—and the charred remains of his younger brother. Taken in by a homesteading family, Jeff ekes out an existence. But as he dons Confederate gray, he never dreams his brother is alive—or that he’s wearing Union blue.

One of his better books I think

At first I was a bit put off by the narrator but quickly got over that once he got into the story.

This wasn't a typical Kelton book IMHO. Yes, it dealt with the hardships of the early West, but it went deeper with the outbreak of the Civil War and how some Texans weren't in favor of secession. I honestly think he did some good research on this aspect of the book. I had to chuckle when they would say "talking American" or "talking Mexican", but I figure that was pretty accurate. Some old west stuff along with some Civil War history, not a bad combination.

If there was one "flaw", I thought the ending was a bit lackluster. OK, so I wanted to know how things worked out! I was honestly sad when the book ended. I wanted more!

Good story, I really enjoy clean (no cussing) listening😇, of course, a wonderful sweet ending.

My favorite Elmer Kelton book.

I’ve listened to several of Elmer Kelton’‘s books, and they’re all good. But this one stands out above the rest. More literary than the others, in my opinion.

Typical Elmer Kelton.

Outstanding storyteller with a great plot. I really hated to see it end. Although looking forward to the next one.

I love a good western!

The story line. I’m a gal of few words and if I wanted to prattle on more than the first three words I would have. Pushy, ain’t ya?!

Great story

Kelton is a great storyteller. This book stands in a proud tradition of books about the Texas frontier.

A story of the old west

First let me say that I like westerns. My favorite western author is Larry McMurtry, but right behind him is Elmer Kelton. This novel is a story of two brothers, separated by tragedy at a young age. The story is of what happens to each of them and is believable albeit fiction. I did get into the story though and wanted to know what happened to these boys. The story also gets into the fringes of the civil war and how the boys get caught up in it. It is not a penny dreadful shoot em up gunfighter story but has just enough action to keep your interest. I gave it four stars because I liked Lonesome Dove and a couple of other McMurtry books better and I don't know how else to distinguish that. If you like westerns then this one is worth your credit. Well narrated too.
