Acerca de esta escucha
Detective Michael Palermo built his career on his unique ability to inhabit two worlds at once: the world of law enforcement and the underworld of New York’s crime family organizations. Palermo participated in over 2,000 arrests while maintaining close relationships with the kingpins of organized crime - ties that allowed him to stay one step ahead of the rest of the New York City Police Department.
This true crime drama takes you inside the police force at its most corrupt and into the dark and dirty world of dons, consiglieres, underbosses, button men, soldiers, and cowboys.

Secretive - even reclusive - Russell Bufalino quietly built his organized crime empire in the decades between Prohibition and the Carter presidency. His reach extended far beyond the coal country of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and quaint Amish farms near Lancaster. Bufalino had a hand in global, national, and local politics of the largest American cities, many of its major industries, and controlled the powerful Teamsters Union. His influence also reached the highest levels of Pennsylvania government and halls of Congress, and his legacy left a culture of corruption that continues to this day.

The “adopted” son of legendary organized crime boss Russell Bufalino, for decades D’Elia had unequaled access to the man the FBI and US Justice Department considered one of the leading organized crime figures in the United States. But the government had no real idea as to the breadth of Bufalino’s power and influence—or that it was Bufalino, from his bucolic home base in Pittston, Pennsylvania, who reigned over the five families in New York and other organized crime families throughout the country.

Pittsburgh's small but lucrative Cosa Nostra mafia family was on the rise in 1985 with a newly crowned Don . . . The men who came to dominate the rackets in western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and West Virginia opened the family to massive profits from drug trafficking and a street tax on other criminal activities. At the same time, the Youngstown, Ohio, faction of the family launched a brutal mob war against the weakening Cleveland mafia and the Altoona, Pennsylvania, crew violently clamped down on their city.

As a cop, Ron Previte was corrupt. As a mobster, he was brutal. And in his final role, as a confidential informant to the FBI, Previte was deadly. The Last Gangster is his story—the story of the last days of the Philadelphia Mob, and of the clash of generations that brought it down once and for all. Convinced that the honor of the "business" was gone, he became the FBI's secret weapon in an intense and highly personalized war on the Philadelphia mob, operating with the same guile, wit, and stone-cold bravado that had made him a force in the underworld.

Reseñas editoriales
In this captivating work, Richard Stanley Cagan exposes the saga of New York City narcotics detective Michael Palermo and his ties to the world of organized crime. Kevin Stillwell gives a tremendous performance, intoning with a grit and vigor that serves to enhance these scenes of NYPD corruption and the intrigue of underground crime families. He is especially adept at portraying the various characters that appear throughout, making each one distinct and memorable. Like classic New York film noir such as The French Connection, Mafia Cop places the listener in the middle of all the heart-stopping action.

Somewhere in the once-placid streets of San Francisco, a young man is on the run, charged by the media with a crime he didn't commit, hounded by demagogues, hunted by a desperate police department. One cop knows that Kevin Shea is innocent of a brutal racial murder. An ambitious politician will use Shea for her own ends. And a down-and-out lawyer is all that stands between Kevin Shea and an even more atrocious crime. For when there's no law left, justice is the only hope.

One of the best books I'll ever read/hear
I had no idea that I would meet a man like this loyal, brave, and courageous detective. The title is deceiving. I've read and listened to hundreds of books and none before, or likely after, will stick with me like this one. I had no idea there were men like Michael and I know this world would be a MUCH better place IF men like him existed today. Much thanks to the author for telling his story, and to the narrator who was able to put me in a time decades before I was born and allowed me to meet some incredible people who didn't bow down to awful, powerful people - and WON. Never forget the cost of fighting back on those who dare to...THESE are the heroes that statues should be of, so that all of us understand and learn what it means to be good.

The story and narration were excellent. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Police , the Mob or street life in general. Outstanding.

Like watching a feature film!
This book was so well presented and performed that it was more like watching a feature film than just listening to an audio recording. Each character was developed with so much detail that I had no trouble keeping the 20 or more main characters clear in my mind as with some other books I’ve read or listened to.
