Narrator Dermot Kerrigan paces this ghost story with deliberate speed, maintaining a feeling of mystery and mounting dread throughout. Stephen, a young orphan, is sent to live at a remote country estate belonging to a relative, an alchemist obsessed with immortality. Stephen begins to have dreams of a young girl and a young boy with missing hearts, and discovers that things may be more sinister than he believed. Kerrigan performs frightening scenes with a dark relish, creating unforgettable images with his descriptions.
