Barbara Bradley Hagerty
Acerca de esta escucha
A dynamic and inspiring exploration of the new science that is redrawing the future for people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s for the better - and for good.
There's no such thing as an inevitable midlife crisis, Barbara Bradley Hagerty writes in this provocative, hopeful book. It's a myth, an illusion. New scientific research explodes the fable that midlife is a time when things start to go downhill for everybody. In fact, midlife can be a great new adventure, when you can embrace fresh possibilities, purposes, and pleasures.
In Life Reimagined, Hagerty explains that midlife is about renewal: It's the time to renegotiate your purpose, refocus your relationships, and transform the way you think about the world and yourself. Drawing from emerging information in neurology, psychology, biology, genetics, and sociology - as well as her own story of midlife transformation - Hagerty redraws the map for people in midlife and plots a new course forward in understanding our health, our relationships, even our futures.

What does it really mean to be a grown-up in today's world? We assume that once we "get it together" with the right job, marry the right person, have children, and buy a home, all is settled and well. But adulthood presents varying levels of growth and is rarely the respite of stability we expected. Turbulent emotional shifts can take place anywhere between the ages of 35 and 70 when we question the choices we've made, realize our limitations, and feel stuck - commonly known as the "midlife crisis".

As Martha Beck says in her book, “Integrity is the cure for psychological suffering. Period.” In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, and with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.

Inspired by Vedic wisdom and modern science, he tackles the entire relationship cycle, from first dates to moving in together to breaking up and starting over. Reseñas de la Crítica
“Life Reimagined paints a portrait of middle age that is far from grim and decelerating. Midlife begins to seem like the second big phase of decision-making. Your identity has been formed; you know who you are; you’ve built up your resources; and now you have the chance to take the big risks precisely because your foundation is already secure.” (David Brooks, The New York Times)
“Life Reimagined gave me hope that midlife, even with its struggles, can be a time of growth and deeper joy in relationships old and new.” (BookPage)
“Bradley uses the perfect mixture of anecdote and facts and knows how to tell a story. Inspiring and reassuring, this book is guaranteed to shake up anyone who is coasting through middle age, reminding them that it’s up to them to find their essence and shape their last years with purpose.” (Booklist)

Historia
According to the Leisure Studies Department at the University of Iowa, true leisure is “that place in which we realize our humanity.” If that’s true, argues Brigid Schulte, then we're doing dangerously little realizing of our humanity. In Overwhelmed, Schulte, a staff writer for The Washington Post, asks: Are our brains, our partners, our culture, and our bosses making it impossible for us to experience anything but “contaminated time”?

Imagine finding a glimmer of good news in a diagnosis of Alzheimer's. And imagine how that would change the outlook of the five million Americans who suffer from Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, not to mention their families, loved ones, and caretakers. A neurologist who's been specializing in dementia and memory loss for more than 20 years, Dr. Gayatri Devi rewrites the story of Alzheimer's by defining it as a spectrum disorder - like autism, Alzheimer's is a disease that affects different people differently.

The midlife crisis is the butt of so many jokes, but this long-derided life stage has an upside. What if we could reframe our thinking about the natural transition of midlife not as a crisis, but as a chrysalis—a time when something profound awakens in us, as we shed our skin, spread our wings, and pollinate our wisdom? In Learning to Love Midlife, Chip Conley offers an alternative narrative to the way we commonly think of our 40s, 50s and 60s. Drawing on the latest social science research, inspiring stories, and timeless wisdom, he reveals 12 reasons why life gets better with age.

Educational and comforting
Barbara does a good job of engaging you from the beginning with compelling anecdotes and research about those going through mid to later years. I found the book inspiring, insightful, and entertaining throughout. If you are looking for novel ways to assess your own situation and context around midlife, and journeys through mid and late life, this is a good read. Of course her performance as a narrator is rock solid due to her years as an NPR correspondent. Barbara, thank you for writing this book

Ms. Hagerty's book is a study in science and art and get to it-ness. Best phrase of the book is "auto-pilot equals death" and I see evidence of it in my fellow middle aged travelers- myself included. Grateful for her sharing the research and personal stories that make this book a must listen.

Fabulous roadmap/consolation/inspiration
I am 52 years old, stating down the barrel of the middle distance (as Michael Stipe lyricised the onset of the middle years) and in the midst of deep career, social and financial transition. I find Barbara Bradley Haggerty's reflection in this time of life to be both consolatory and inspiring. Grounded in extensive research, and brought to life by real world "case studies", it provides a road map to overcome the obstacles and embrace the scenic vistas of the final forty percent (plus or minus) of the journey. I have passed it along to lifelong friends with whom I hope to grow old, and I plan on revisiting it myself annually to ensue I don't stray from the path of happiness and fulfillment the lays out for us. Thank you, Barbara!

I LOVED this Book
This book addresses a niche I have been hungry for but have found nowhere else. The minute former NPR reporter, Barbara Bradley Hagerty (with her familiar and reassuring voice), begins narrating her important investigation into what constitutes A Life of Meaning - you know you're in good hands. This book is essential for anyone in midlife who is taking stock of where they are and what's possible in terms of career, family, and following your passion. (...Even if - and especially if - you think you've already missed the boat.) She navigates along with you in a way that creates camaraderie and supports your path - even if you're not sure where you're going. She doesn't know either, but she gets there. And so will you.
