Al Moreno
Acerca de esta escucha
FINALIST - Book of the Year Awards, The Independent Author Network
A vivid true-life tale of service, survival, and sacrifice
This gripping memoir vividly recounts Al Moreno’s rise as a gifted and fearless Los Angeles police officer, surviving gangs and homicidal situations in urban war zones as he strove to achieve his personal and professional dreams. Packed with unforgettable scenes of both beauty and despair, it culminates in his vocal stand against corruption within the LAPD, and the political retribution that ensued - a dirty internal investigation that unleashed the murderous vendetta of a violent ex-con from the Aryan Brotherhood.
Born in Tijuana, Mexico, Al Moreno’s natural prowess for police work resulted in an unprecedented 70 commendations as he dealt with scores of gangs and violent criminals during his tenure with the Los Angeles Police Department officer in the late-1970s. Moreno was one of 36 police officers chosen from the ranks of the entire LAPD to launch what became the nation’s premiere specialized anti-gang unit, Operations Control Bureau C.R.A.S.H. (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums).
He not only led his colleagues in arrests, but he was also frequently commended for his uncanny ability to control and arrest heavily armed suspects without the use of lethal force. His LAPD field commendations often noted this ability: “Regardless of how hectic the situation may be, Moreno never compromises completeness for speed. Officer Moreno displays particular skill when handling armed suspects, as he recovers more weapons in the field than any other C.R.A.S.H. officer yet has avoided involvement in an officer-involved shooting.” Before becoming a policeman, Moreno served with honor as a United States Marine in the Vietnam War, where he received a commendation for outstanding performance of duty."

For 20 years, gang unit detectives Tim Brennan and Robert Ladd patrolled the streets of Compton. They witnessed the birth and rise of gangsta rap with acts they knew personally, such as N.W.A and D.J. Quik; dealt firsthand with the chaos of the L.A. riots, its aftermath, and the gang truce that followed; were involved in the investigations of the murders of hip-hop stars Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., and were major players in an all-out tug-of-war with City Hall that ultimately resulted in the permanent shut-down of the Compton Police Department.

Acclaimed journalist Randall Sullivan follows Russell Poole, a highly decorated LAPD detective who in 1997 was called to investigate a controversial cop-on-cop shooting, eventually to discover that the officer killed was tied to Marion “Suge” Knight’s notorious gangsta rap label, Death Row Records. During his investigation, Poole came to realize that a growing cadre of black officers were allied not only with Death Row, but with the murderous Bloods street gang. And incredibly, Poole began to uncover evidence that at least some of these “gangsta cops” may have been involved in the murders of rap superstars Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur.

The most common triggers for homicide are fear, rage, revenge, money, lust, and, more rarely, sheer madness. This isn’t an exact science, of course. Any given murder can have multiple triggers. Sex and revenge seem to be common partners in crime. This book offers my memories of homicide cases that I investigated or oversaw. In each case, I examine the trigger that led to death. I chose this theme for the book because even though the why of a murder case may not be critical in an investigation, it can sometimes lead us to the killer.

400 Things Cops Know shows police work on the inside, from the viewpoint of the regular cop on the beat - a profession that can range from rewarding to bizarre to terrifying, all within the course of an eight-hour shift. Written by veteran police sergeant Adam Plantinga, 400 Things Cops Know brings the listener into life the way cops experience it - a life of danger, frustration, occasional triumph, and plenty of grindingly hard routine work.

During the height of the crack epidemic that decimated the streets of D.C., Ruben Castaneda covered the crime beat for the Washington Post. The first in his family to graduate from college, he had landed a job at one of the country’s premier newspapers. But his apparent success masked a devastating secret: he was a crack addict. Even as he covered the drug-fueled violence that was destroying the city, he was prowling S Street, a 24/7 open-air crack market, during his off hours, looking for his next fix.

In the fall of 1941, a momentous trial was set to begin that threatened to end the careers and lives of New York’s most brutal mob kingpins. The lead witness, Abe Reles, had been a trusted executioner for Murder, Inc., the enforcement arm of a coast-to-coast mob network known as the Syndicate. But the man responsible for coolly silencing hundreds of informants was about to become the most talkative snitch of all. In exchange for police protection, Reles was prepared to rat out his murderous friends, from Albert Anastasia to Bugsy Siegel....

It's men like Jimmy Coonan and Mickey Featherstone who gave Hell's Kitchen its name. In the mid-1970s, these two longtime friends take the reins of New York's Irish mob, using brute force to give it hitherto unthinkable power. Jimmy, a charismatic sociopath, is the leader. Mickey, whose memories of Vietnam torture him daily, is his enforcer. Together they make brutality their trademark, butchering bodies or hurling them out the window.

On New Year’s Day 2013, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Gene Weingarten asked three strangers to, literally, pluck a day, month, and year from a hat. That day - chosen completely at random - was Sunday, December 28, 1986, by any conventional measure a most ordinary day. Weingarten spent the next six years proving that there is no such thing. That Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s turned out to be filled with comedy, tragedy, implausible irony, cosmic comeuppances, kindness, cruelty, heroism, cowardice, genius, idiocy, and much more....

Historia
Rene "Boxer" Enriquez grew up on the violent streets of East L.A., where gang fights, robberies, and drive-by shootings were fueled by rage, drugs, and alcohol. When he finally landed in prison - at the age of 19 - Enriquez found an organization that brought him the respect he always wanted: the near-mythic and widely feared Mexican Mafia, La Eme. What the organization saw in Enriquez was a young man who knew no fear and would kill anyone - justifiably or not - in the blink of an eye.

Gangster Squad chronicles the true story of the secretive police unit that waged an anything-goes war to drive Mickey Cohen and other hoodlums from Los Angeles after WWII. In 1946, the LAPD launched the Gangster Squad with eight men who met covertly on street corners and slept with Tommy guns under their beds. But for two cops, all that mattered was nailing the strutting gangster Mickey Cohen. Sgt. Jack O’Mara was a square-jawed church usher, Sgt. Jerry Wooters a cynical maverick....

A great man
The audiobook kept my interest the entire time. Having met Al Moreno at gang training during my law enforcement career I have to say he is extremely knowledgeable about the gang world, and he cares deeply about other human beings. This is a must-listen-to see how agencies engage in skewing “numbers” and engage in nepotism.

A real eye-opener!!! Highly recommend
I read (listened to this book-terrific reader) after meeting the author in a coffee shop. I learned so much from the book, which is much of the author's life story. Mr. Moreno's life background and my life background are very different. I am about the same age as Mr. Moreno, but never really grasped or appreciated the perspective of someone physically facing the dangers of fighting in war or trying to stop gang violence daily.
The author's real-life experiences were shared with the reader in a manner that was very thought-provoking and eye-opening. Many thanks to him for doing all that he did and for sharing those experiences.
There was a common thread that I am all too familiar with- and that most of us can understand. The organizational hierarchy and chain of command have no tolerance for any challenge to authority or criticism. Unfortunately, this pattern was not an eye-opener. Mr. Moreno could have chosen the "go along, to get along" course. He did not because lives were and are at stake.
,
I will not spoil the ending of this book, other than to say, that Mr. Moreno's story is reality.

Rare for the narrator to deliver a great book
I like the organized crime/ police genre of books and this one did not disappoint. The narrator did an excellent job in delivering the story. Overall great story line, great insight into the characters personal life and great account on the gritty work of a police officer who unfortunately encountered the world famous LAPD internal politics!

Not Persuasive-in fact a pity party
I was very disappointed in this story. At least half of it dealt with his partying and romancing. In fact, the end of his career is directly related to his drinking and party life and romancing. I am sure he had great potential at one time, but even taking his own admissions, it is no wonder his career as a police officer was cut short. I am not saying that as one who does not understand the difficult streets of gang enforcement in a big city, I have also been there as a sworn member of a large metro gang unit- not LA. But his tactics, and justifications for both verbal and physical brutality were troubling. I know that it was a different time in the 70s, but it was that kind of policing that has evolved into many of the troubles we have today.
