Acerca de esta escucha
Recent years have seen a revival of the heated culture wars of the 1990s, but this time its battleground is the Internet. On one side the alt-right ranges from the once obscure neo-reactionary and white separatist movements, to geeky subcultures like 4chan, to more mainstream manifestations such as the Trump-supporting gay libertarian Milo Yiannopolous.
On the other side, a culture of struggle sessions and virtue signaling lurks behind a therapeutic language of trigger warnings and safe spaces. The feminist side of the online culture wars has its equally geeky subcultures right through to its mainstream expression.
Kill All Normies explores some of the cultural genealogies and past parallels of these styles and subcultures, drawing from transgressive styles of 60s libertinism and conservative movements, to make the case for a rejection of the perpetual cultural turn.

From a loose movement that lurked in the shadows in the early 2000s, the alt-right has achieved a level of visibility that has allowed it to expand significantly throughout America’s cultural, political, and digital landscapes. Racist, sexist, and homophobic beliefs that were previously unspeakable have become commonplace, normalized, and accepted - endangering American democracy and society as a whole. Yet in order to dismantle the destructive movement that has invaded our public consciousness, we must first understand the core beliefs that drive the alt-right.

The internet has transformed the ways we think and act, and by consequence, our politics. The most impactful recent political movements on the far left and right started with massive online collectives of teenagers. Strangely, both movements began on the same website: an anime imageboard called 4chan.org. It Came from Something Awful is the fascinating and bizarre story of 4chan and its profound effect on youth counterculture.

What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has.

Historia
Here, anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: He shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods - that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Historia
Leading a cultural revolution driven by identity politics and so-called 'social justice', the new puritanism movement is best understood as a religion - one that makes grand claims to moral purity and tolerates no dissent. In The New Puritans, Andrew Doyle powerfully examines the underlying belief-systems of this ideology and how it has risen so rapidly to dominate all major political, cultural and corporate institutions. He reasons that, to move forward, we need to understand where these New Puritans came from and what they hope to achieve.

The Viking Age - from 750 to 1050 saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture.

The white power movement in America wants a revolution. It has declared all-out war against the federal government and its agents, and has carried out - with military precision - an escalating campaign of terror against the American public. In Bring the War Home, Kathleen Belew gives us the first full history of the movement that consolidated in the 1970s and 1980s around a potent sense of betrayal in the Vietnam War and made tragic headlines in the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building.

Great journalism here!
A quick engaging overview of the previous few years of the planet weird taking place online in the so called cyber culture wars. The book is fair and unbiased in its general reporting and assessment of it and if anything could've been longer as the writer barely skims the surface of the general experience but does a great job cataloging it all from its first publicly known red flags to the later general aberrations manifesting from it. Perhaps Mrs Nagle will write another book on the subject as I do feel it is one of deep concern for us all and there's more we could learn from it as we seem to now engage more in cyberspace than ever before. It's here to stay. There has been a curve with our online experience that although quite incredible has also allowed for the worst in human behavior from every angle of the known political and cultural spectrum. Kudos for a quick and informative piece of work here. Thanks for publishing it Angela Nagle! Great narrator too. My only complaint is it could've been longer but does nicely covering the basic bases for anyone trying to get a better understanding.

Utterly Enlightening
This book provides a refreshing and enlightening view of both the internet right and the internet left as deeply flawed in their own unique ways, and traces the history of how their interactions with one another have fueled each other's intensifying tribalism and disgust of the other. It adds subtlety and nuance to what has previously been a quite simplistic discussion on the left of how Trump won and how to properly understand various facets of conservative culture.

Really interesting dive into internet culture
Really interesting and in-depth look into the online culture wars. At times the audio can be hard to follow as it seems to jump quickly so you've got to pay close attention. The content can also jump from a simpler breakdown of the culture wars to a high-level academic review with references to any number of content that isn't always explained and can leave you feeling left behind if you don't have that level of background on the content. Lastly, the author does express biases in the book and while I respect the transparency some of the admitted biases seemed unnecessary and distracting as well as somewhat petty. But overall the content is exactly what I was looking for to start learning about different areas of online culture.

not good and often wrong
Cleary written by someone adhering to to doctrine of centrism or stuck in the smug self satisfaction of pointing out to flaws on both sides. Ignoring the entire history of the far right and proclaiming Tumblr as the 4chan of the left. This book is riddled with unjustified opinions and factual errors. Of course it's all expressed as though it's plain and obvious. When compared to other books trying to explain the rise of the alt right and the current culture wars this book is on the low end of rigor and quality. I'm annoyed that I used one of my audible credits on this trite, self congratulatory waste of time.

Should have gone more in depth
There are a lot of good, interesting points here, but I don't feel like the author researched the topics deeply enough. It's well-written. The narration is decent. The author made am attempt and displaying "both sides" of the issue. But Angela doesn't understand a lot of what she's talking about. And she definitely misrepresented Fight Club 😅

this book has been one of the best explorations into the online culture wars, and truly enlightening to the sensibilities of 21st century culture. truly worth a read to anyone worth their salt. Many of you would have only heard one side of the story, but this book does a good job showing the toxic nature of both sides of the internet.
