Acerca de esta escucha

The Allied invasions of Sicily and Italy in 1943 were bloody and pivotal, securing the Mediterranean, capitalizing on the overthrow of Mussolini, and pinning down German troops that could have been used on the Russian Front or in France after D-Day. The men who made the Allied victories in Sicily and Italy possible - soldiers and officers, bombardiers and drivers, doctors and generals - are honored and remembered in these minutes by famed war correspondent Richard Tregaskis. His experiences take him from bomb-bay doors over Rome, to the chaotic front lines in Italy, where he nearly died from a shrapnel wound. The uniquely American features of the Second World War are unforgettably inscribed through the pen of Richard Tregaskis.

wounding by shrapnel and survival is an incredible story

this book is worth a listen just to get his in depth description of dangerous battle lines in italian mountains, which leads to getting hit by german artillery and having to save himself by hiking back out to get to an aid station. tregaskis is great at relating the feel for each place, i felt i was beside him in a bomber, in a jeep on a cliffside road, or taking cover on a rocky mountainside.
also Tregaskis relates his analysis from real experience on the difference between war in south pacific vs europe and japanese vs german infantry, he was one of very few who saw front line action in both theatres. amazing that this reporter survived ww2 and brought us these detailed accounts of what it was really like.
