In pursuit of peace and family ties, American tourist Megan goes on a road trip around Ireland. When she becomes stranded deep in the mountains, the Brogan family come to her rescue. But is it luck, or is Megan's nightmare just beginning?
The Wicklow Mountains offer breathtaking beauty to all who venture in.
Where nature abounds.
Where solitude beckons.
Where no one can hear you scream.
Ideal for fans of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Deliverance, Hush, My Darling is an Irish horror thriller that delves into the depths of human resilience . . . and human cruelty.
Contains mature themes.

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest—Hush, My Darling is another chilling, brilliantly crafted thriller from Leigh Kenny, and it firmly cements her status as a must-read author for fans of psychological horror. This book had me on the edge of my seat as I listened to it, dreading each new twist and even hesitating to continue at points, not because I wasn’t invested, but because the anxiety and intensity were so gripping it physically unsettled me.
The story follows Megan, an American tourist exploring her late father’s homeland of Ireland. What begins as a peaceful solo journey through the lush, scenic countryside quickly turns sinister after a car accident lands her in the care of the Brogan family. What seems like a lucky break swiftly unravels into a nightmare she may never escape.
Kenny effectively captures the sense of claustrophobia and helplessness throughout the book. The atmosphere is steeped in dread, and yet the setting remains beautiful, further enhancing the horror. If Hush, My Darling was a tourism deterrent for Ireland, it’s because Kenny writes with such a terrifying realism that you’ll swear it could happen. In my opinion, this book was a cleaver matchup between Hostel and Misery, with all the blood and gore included.
The characters are vividly rendered. Megan is easy to root for, and the Brogan family is portrayed with such unnerving complexity that you can’t help but loathe them. Their actions feel all too human, ant that’s precisely what makes the novel so disturbing.
If there’s one minor critique, it’s the occasional abrupt time jump. There were moments where I would have appreciated a closer look at the days between key events. However, it’s clear Kenny was in full control of the pacing and narrative structure, trimming the fate to maintain relentless tension, and in that regard, she absolutely succeeded.
The audiobook narration by EJ Lavery is exceptional. Lavery brings the characters to life with distinct voices and emotional depth, enhancing the already immersive storytelling. It’s a performance that elevates the experience, making it even more haunting and hard to forget.
In short, Hush, My Darling is an intense, nerve-wracking psychological thriller with razor-sharp writing, an immersive atmosphere, and an ending that will stick with you long after the final chapter. If you are looking for a story that gets under your skin and stays there, this one delivers.
