Acerca de esta escucha

Harrow the Ninth, the sequel to the sensational, USA Today best-selling novel Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the emperor's haunted space station.

She answered the emperor's call.

She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.

In victory, her world has turned to ash.

After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath - but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her.

Sealed in the Gothic gloom of the emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: Is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

Brilliant in a completely different way than 1st

Never read a sequel less like the original. I'm short on time, but for now suffice it to say that I loved it. It ties up more loose ends from Gideon than I realized were left to be pulled, and I only have the vaguest of ideas of where the next book will go.

A storytelling marvel and a book you’ll want to read twice

Tamsyn Muir’s bold choices in characters and structuring and Moira Quirk’s scintillating narration combine to create a wonderful audiobook experience. This a sequel that not only lives up to but triumphs over the first.

Nothing like the first book.

This one’s incredibly humorless for the first four fifths of the story. No Gideon, no magic-school, no specific mystery.

It’s a rather dry introspection on the detailed mechanics of Lectorhood and how exactly the Necromancy works down to a cellular level. Things pick up in the end, but it wasn’t the most fun ride until then.

Good but…

TLDR:I loved Gideon the ninth and was super stoked for this book. It ends up being super entertaining but it’s a slog to get there.

Narrator is great

*Beware- spoilers ahead-beware*

The first 3/4 of the book was frustrating to the point of almost rage quitting. I almost stopped listening because of the “flashbacks”, not being what actually happened.

I get the build up but it felt like listening in on a conversation in a language you barely know. You recognize portions of it and can follow along but ultimately have no idea what’s happening. For that to last over 14 hours of a 19 hour book is just inappropriate to me.

For the people that will say “ it’s supposed to be that way for the payoff and that you understand the mental changes she underwent, and the possession” sure sure, I get that. Here’s the thing, I listen to enjoy, not cause myself frustration. The way it is written clearly shows that it is working towards a payoff and you can piece together parts of what’s happening. Waiting for 3/4 of the book to be over to confirm or deny your assumptions for that to occur was painful.

That being said, the last 4-5ish hours were wonderful, fun, and everything I had hoped for in this book. I look forward to the next book and I hope this doesn’t dissuade people from listening to this one, just brace yourself for aggravation (that was longer than necessary) with a fun payoff.

challenge to follow but WAY worth it.

the view point the author chose to tell this story threw me for a loop and found it to be a challenge to keep focused. once I got used to it around chapter 5 or 6 I then got shuffled right in. Bring it on book 3 😃

Odd, but once you understand why…

No spoilers. I’ll just encourage you to gut it out, it is worth it when you get there.

Two main lines, one sucks and the other rocks

It is obvious which timeline we are in for each chapter. Sadly, one of them sucks (castle past). That's not a spoiler because you'll know it's bad when you start it. The writing in this timeline simply isn't entertaining and lacks much relevance. Had this timeline been largely erased, the remaining book would've been 5 stars. However, anyone listening should be skipping about half the book. That makes it a 3 star story.

The current story and the backstory on Earth are both interesting. But the castle past was just dreadful.

Narration is perfect. Absolutely on point at all times and the main saving grace.

A STELLAR JOY TO READ

A fantastic and delightful read! Moira quirks narration makes an INCREDIBLE book one of the most delightful stories of all time. Wonderful use of narrative tools, with a twist that, while expected, punches you in the chest. A beautiful sequel to a kickass book. I die only for this, and so then I perish.
