Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year 2023

This program features sound design and special effects to enhance your enjoyment of Fractal Noise. Listen out for the sounds of the anomaly at the center of Talos VII and original music evoking the barren landscape.

"Narrator Jennifer Hale's outstanding performance brings this story of alien invasion to life....every unique voice enhances the listening experience." AudioFile, on Earphones Award winner, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars.

"Jennifer Hale's narration of this sci-fi novel is exemplary work. Her variety of voices and characterizations, as well as her grasp of the intense drama, is stunning. And just when you think she can't get better, she sings in character, and it transforms her entire performance into art. The combination of Paolini's gripping drama and Hale's voice acting should not be missed."- AudioFile on Fractal Noise

"Narrator Hale’s performance backed by immersive sound effects, elevate this science fiction audiobook about a small team of scientists on the precipice of a major discovery."- Booklist

A new blockbuster science fiction adventure from world-wide phenomenon and #1 New York Times bestseller Christopher Paolini, set in the world of New York Times and USA Today bestseller To Sleep in a Sea of Stars.

July 25, 2234: The crew of the Adamura discovers the Anomaly.

On the seemingly uninhabited planet Talos VII:a circular pit, 50 kilometers wide.

Its curve not of nature, but design.

Now, a small team must land and journey on foot across the surface to learn who built the hole and why.

But they all carry the burdens of lives carved out on disparate colonies in the cruel cold of space.

For some the mission is the dream of the lifetime, for others a risk not worth taking, and for one it is a desperate attempt to find meaning in an uncaring universe.

Each step they take toward the mysterious abyss is more punishing than the last.

And the ghosts of their past follow.

Not a prequel, more like a bad spinoff

I was expecting a sci-fi book, an actual prequel. i would say 50% of it is about a guy who lost his gf/wife. 25% is about walking/surviving. Maybe 10% about arguing religion and beliefs. 10% about making stupid decisions and arguing/fighting about it. And the last 5% might be all the sci-fi you get.

They make so many bad decisions it's just stupid... the sledges broke after "2 feet", instead of taking maybe a day or two to fix the problem, they continue by pulling them.. What are you trying to achieve other than killing your self ? Someone broke a leg.. Oh yeah let's just add more dead weight to kill our selves faster instead of going back..

Anyways i just don't understand what was the point of this book. It shouldn't have been marketed as a prequel. The audio performance was pretty good tho but Paolini really missed the mark this time imo.

Narrator did the best they could

Narration was good but the story fell flatter than a pancake. I was very hopeful after the first book but this was not the sequel (if you can even call it that) that the series deserved. Overall I would not recommend this book and it will be a few hours of your life that you might wish you had back.

To struggle pointlessly

I loved Sleep in a Sea of Stars and the blurb describing this book clearly says, “From the world of TSIASOS …”. It’s a dirty lie! It was a slog for both the (rather unlikable) protagonist and the reader as well and had ZERO to do with Paolini’s prior work. It was awkwardly overly dramatic and grating with undeveloped characters, out of place and superficial philosophical offerings and general pointlessness. It finished with little resolution but I was just happy it was done. I think I only finished it all because I really like Jeffifer Hale’s narration.

Thud

You know when you're half way through *thum* a book and you're too invested to stop, but just want it to be over? Thum. That's this book, some interesting ideas, but not engaging at any *thum* point.

Dumb... just dumb...

This was awful. The narrator was amazing. The story flat out sucked, It is basically the LoTRs without anything else except walking... There is not even an ending, no conclusion. Just bad...

Not what I expected

Been waiting for the sequel of his last book and really didn’t see any excitement here.
Well hope he tries again

I was hoping for..... more

I loved To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars. I was really hoping that this would build on that. While it does work as a companion, it never really felt like it was adding to the universe, Just a distorted reflection. really looking forward to the true sequel.

ending wasn't impactful

the characters were fun to meet, and the story was interesting and kept me reading/listening, but the ending kind of fell flat for me

Never took off

I am a huge fan of his work but this story just dragged on. Written well but the story was building and building with no climax. Like when a movie ends and you staring at the tv saying “that’s it?” Pretty disappointed. Jennifer Hale is still amazing and did a great job narrating.

Not great. Bland.

Unimaginative and doesn’t go anywhere or end anywhere. Kept waiting for something interesting that never happened.
