The right product availability has also affected our choices, and while hyperpigmentation is one of the issues many have to deal with (which usually presents itself as dark spots that typically don't move despite the reasons it comes, be it exposure to sun, hormonal changes, acne scarring, hormonal changes, or even genetics), suffice it to say there are only a few products that can actually combat this skin worry. But pinpointing the reasons for the problem is key if you want to have the best chance of committing to a skin care journey that provides benefits across the board, not just for hyperpigmentation. What’s more, hyperpigmentation isn’t a single condition; it’s a family of conditions, which is important to know from the start.
There are many types of hyperpigmentation you can experience sun-induced dark spots (also known as age spots or liver spots), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and melisma because different triggers can cause each. The reasons why dark spots occur might differ, but the basic biochemical pathway is usually an overproduction of a pigment called melanin in certain areas of the skin, which results in uneven pigmentation.
