Juliet is failing to juggle motherhood and her stalled-out dissertation on confessional poetry when her husband, Michael, informs her that he wants to leave his job and buy a sailboat. With their two kids - Sybil, age seven, and George, age two - Juliet and Michael set off for Panama, where their 44 foot sailboat awaits them. The initial result is transformative; the marriage is given a gust of energy, Juliet emerges from her depression, and the children quickly embrace the joys of being feral children at sea.

Would it be terrible to say I liked it better than Emma?
It’s kind of a big deal to write a prequel for such a well known and beloved author as Jane Austen. Happily, Peterson has done her research and is a talented and creative soul herself. The two flow into one another well and the background story holds its own.
The biggest difference I feel in the characters is that their self-awareness is greater in Peterson’s version of them. Which, I honestly really appreciate.
If you’ve ever enjoyed an Austen novel, read it! Even if Emma was your least favorite.

Fits Seamlessly as a Prequel to Emma
Fits seamlessly with the book Emma and I loved the narration. I especially liked the development of the relationship between Jane Fairfax and the Campbell's.
