“Provocative and thrilling ... Loeb asks us to think big and to expect the unexpected.”—Alan Lightman, New York Times bestselling author of Einstein’s Dreams and Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine
Harvard’s top astronomer lays out his controversial theory that our solar system was recently visited by advanced alien technology from a distant star.
In late 2017, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar system, moving so quickly that it could only have come from another star. Avi Loeb, Harvard’s top astronomer, showed it was not an asteroid; it was moving too fast along a strange orbit, and left no trail of gas or debris in its wake. There was only one conceivable explanation: the object was a piece of advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization.
In Extraterrestrial, Loeb takes listeners inside the thrilling story of the first interstellar visitor to be spotted in our solar system. He outlines his controversial theory and its profound implications: for science, for religion, and for the future of our species and our planet. A mind-bending journey through the furthest reaches of science, space-time, and the human imagination, Extraterrestrial challenges listeners to aim for the stars—and to think critically about what’s out there, no matter how strange it seems.

For as long as we have looked to the skies, the question of whether life on earth is the only life to exist has been at the core of the human experience, driving scientific debate and discovery, shaping spiritual belief, and prompting existential thought across borders and generations. It’s one of our culture’s favorite conversations, and yet, the idea of extraterrestrial intelligence has been largely banished to the realm of fantasy and conspiracy. Now, for the first time, the full story of our national obsession with UFOs is told.

What is the nature of unidentified aerial phenomena? Forty years ago a small cadre of dedicated researchers began actively investigating cases, interviewing witnesses, and exchanging data through a small, informal network of international contacts. Today this low-profile network, or "invisible college", has grown into a larger, multination volunteer research effort joined by many individuals. But the questions first raised 40 years ago remain current - and unanswered.

In Dimensions, Dr. Jacques Vallee reexamines the historical record that led to the modern UFO phenomenon and to the belief in alien contact. He then tackles the enigma of abduction reports, which come from various times and various countries, as well as the psychic and spiritual components of the contact experience. In the last portion of the book, he notes the factors that inhibit research into the phenomenon - the triple coverup and political motivations - and concludes that the extraterrestrial theory is simply not strange enough to explain the facts.

In February 1971, as Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell hurtled Earthward through space, he was engulfed by a profound sense of universal connectedness. He intuitively sensed that his presence and that of the planet in the window were all part of a deliberate, universal process, and that the glittering cosmos itself was, in some way, conscious. The experience was so overwhelming, Mitchell knew his life would never be the same.

In this revised and expanded edition of Richard Dolan's previous classic on the UFO subject, he brings the listener through the tumultuous journey of the UFO/UAP subject through the early 2020s. This includes a detailed treatment of the changes to our public discussion of UFOs since 2017 and what is the likely end point of this new direction. But Dolan provides much more than this, including providing critical context of the UFO subject within the broader social, political, and technological developments of our world, something that makes him unique among UFO researchers.

Historia
Of the many books on UFOs and aliens, this one may be unique. Richard Dolan, one of the world’s leading historians of the UFO subject, has analyzed the different alien types and agendas based on longstanding patterns observed by witnesses. This is both a careful review of the best evidence we have of human-alien interaction, as well as a bold speculation of just who the aliens are and what they want. Dolan’s analysis starts with our ancient prehistory and potential genetic modifications and monitoring by extraterrestrials.

Historia
How much can we know about the world? In this audiobook physicist Marcelo Gleiser traces our search for answers to the most fundamental questions of existence, the origin of the universe, the nature of reality, and the limits of knowledge. In so doing he reaches a provocative conclusion: Science, like religion, is fundamentally limited as a tool for understanding the world. As science and its philosophical interpretations advance, we face the unsettling recognition of how much we don't know.

The Big Bang is all but dead, and we do not yet know what will replace it. Our universe's "beginning" is at an end. What does this have to do with us here on Earth? Our lives are about to be dramatically shaken again - as altered as they were with the invention of the clock, the steam engine, the railroad, the radio and the Internet.

Since its formation nearly five billion years ago, our planet has been the sole living world in a vast and silent universe. Now, Earth's isolation is coming to an end. Over the past two decades, astronomers have discovered thousands of "exoplanets" orbiting other stars, including some that could be similar to our own world. Studying those distant planets for signs of life will be crucial to understanding life's intricate mysteries right here on Earth. In a firsthand account of this unfolding revolution, Lee Billings draws on interviews with top researchers.

In 1959, the Soviet probe Luna 3 took the first photos of the far side of the Moon. Even in their poor resolution, the images stunned scientists: The far side is an enormous mountainous expanse, not the vast lava plains seen from Earth. Subsequent missions have confirmed this in much greater detail. How could this be, and what might it tell us about our own place in the universe? As it turns out, quite a lot. When the Earth Had Two Moons is an astonishing exploration of planet formation and the origins of life by one of the world’s most innovative planetary geologists.

Icy, rocky, sometimes dusty, always mysterious – comets and asteroids are among the Solar System's very oldest inhabitants, formed within a swirling cloud of gas and dust in the area of space that eventually hosted the Sun and its planets. Locked within each of these extra-terrestrial objects is the 4.6-billion-year wisdom of Solar System events, and by studying them at close quarters using spacecraft we can coerce them into revealing their closely-guarded secrets. This offers us the chance to answer some fundamental questions about our planet and its inhabitants.

He then tackles the enigma of abduction reports, which come from various times and various countries, as well as the psychic and spiritual components of the contact experience. Loved it!
An easy essay for those with even the most casual interest in science and astronomy.
1 part science, 1 part philosophy with a dash of dreams. Avi lays out not only the possibility of object "1I/2017 U1" aka "Omuamua" being of extraterrestrial origin, but also the dangers and pitfalls of science dismissing it as "not exceptional" beyond having traveled from outside our solar system. He deliberates, at some length how, if the scientific community would dare to look beyond common, accepted answers, new and exciting discoveries could lay within our reach.

Loeb's book shows the narrow minded arrogance of Quackademeia and how paradigm changes based on evidence have become the new heresy. Science ( by that they mean scientists) should be viewed by the ignorant masses as infallible and all their opinions and beliefs gospel.

I stopped at the aforementioned chapter to write this review.
One-two combo science and philosophy will knock you into seing the long view of the universe and humanity's place in it.
It is my fondest wish that the determination and hopefulnes of the ideas in this book go viral and stay with us for generations to come, not a good analogy I know, much like some in the book.

Avi presents his case based on some very serious data that he and others collected during the very short presence of this unknown visitor. Is it about aliens, well maybe, or maybe just a very fortunate coincidence that past our planet. For the first time in recorded history an object, still unknow has crossed Earth's path from outside our local solar system. Could it be a message from a superior race, or just a large rock without any intelligent force behind it. Either way, this is a fun book to listen to, You must keep an open mind and follow the science behind extraterrestrial.

Thought provoking
Its a book that will have you thinking about possibilities. I have done a great deal of research along side listening to this production and finding myself appreciating Avi Loeb in many ways. I believe scientist should take more risk and hope Avi continues to be an example for them.
