His best-known scientific contribution was his research on the possibility of extraterrestrial life, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by exposure to light. The following is a lecture Sagan gave in 1977 during which he discussed the place, scale and geometry of earth–the third planet from the Sun, formed 4.5 billion years ago–in our solar system.

A national treasure, LOVE the narration!
It's hard for me to understand why some people are posting comments about the audio quality. I love this book, and I especially LOVE the fact that we get to hear Carl Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan's actual voices doing the narration.
While it would be great if they were able to recover the entire original audio, I'm so grateful they not only recovered some of it, but chose to let Ann read the rest. There is no better substitute for Carl Sagan than Ann Druyan.

Inspiring book that gives pride and humility to humanity
The few chapters narrated by carl Sagan remind me of how great of a speaker he was and how he brought science to everyone. The chapters narrated by his wife are a little less fun to listen to but the content is no less engaging.
