Manteniendo el lenguaje directo de las conferencias originales que ofreció en la Universidad Jussieu en París, el autor va citando fielmente, casi uno a uno, los versículos de los cuatro evangelios ("cada frase del Evangelio es perfecta y contiene una enseñanza") para realizar a continuación una interpretación, completamente nueva y radical, de lo que éstos pretenden decirnos. Como el propio autor señala, "esta nueva interpretación, que afecta tanto a la sexualidad de Jesús o de María, al nacimiento y muerte del Cristo, a las bienaventuranzas o a los milagros, intentará proponer una Moral satisfactoria basada en la salud y la belleza; y enseñar a los que estén listos y prestos a mutar, el sagrado regreso a sí mismos."
