Esther: When we risk everything

Esther is one of the books of the Bible which draws critics to discount it as having an unproven validity, in an attempt to prove the Bible is unreliable and not the unerring Word of God. It is a curious book because it is a historical narrative, which has no spiritual references or specific lessons and, in many ways, it appears that its only purpose is to put the celebration of Purim into a historical context. However, the narrative is loaded with lessons and applications for the people of God. Even though God is not mentioned in the narrative, just like in creation, His sovereignty and divine direction is seen throughout the story. The book really has two discernible themes. The first examines when people risk everything and the other is when coincidence reveals God’s sovereignty. The thread I want to pull on through the story is that of when people risk everything, because I believe it has practical application for us today. If you have ever watch someone gamble, the height of their commitment is when they go all in. They bet everything in hopes of a handsome payout and that makes them risk everything. For a person called by God, going all in is an act of faith in the God who calls us. The difference between faith and my gambling illustration is that our risk is based on the faithfulness of God and not the favorable odds of making the right choice. One is a sure bet and the other can lead to disaster. Esther is a lesson in taking the right risk, for the right reason, at the right time.
