America is headed toward dysfunction because of scientists’ hubris, religious fundamentalists’ resentment of challenges to their beliefs, and politicians who share those resentments or are willing to exploit them. Most religious fundamentalists refuse to accept the fact that their human origin story is a myth and resent science. Many deny the human causation of climate change and responsibility for disease spread and vote for politicians who oppose amelioration. Those who desire a Christian nation seem to have no concept of how religion-dominated nations have been dysfunctional. Many scientists have contributed to societal functioning but too many scientists refuse to acknowledge that some scientists contribute to racism, disease spread, and climate change. In 2016 the politics of fear replaced the politics of hope and a narcissist sociopath with economic ties to Russian oligarchs was elected President due to the anachronistic electoral college system. The U.S. had among the worst pandemic death rates of democratic countries, partly due to scientists’ miscues and partly due to Donald Trump’s ineptitude and disinformation. Government scientists authored false claims about regulations to reduce global warming. The big lie (election fraud) led to an attack on the U.S. capitol. The Republican Party is mired in disinformation. These dysfunctions are making Trump’s false image of a dystopian society come true.
