Dracula's Guest is believed to be the deleted first chapter of Stoker’s masterpiece, Dracula, removed because the publisher felt the chapter was unnecessary due to the length of the manuscript. In the preface to the 1914 short story collection Dracula's Guest and Other Weird Stories, Stoker’s widow, Florence Bram Stoker, notes "To his original list of stories in this book, I have added an hitherto unpublished episode from Dracula. It was originally excised owing to the length of the book, and may prove of interest to the many readers of what is considered my husband's most remarkable work." Despite the widow Stoker's prefaced note and supporting evidence, some Stoker scholars, including Elizabeth Miller, do not believe that the story was indeed the deleted chapter.

Dracula’s Guest tells the story of an unnamed Englishman visiting Munich before departing for Transylvania. Ignoring the warning of his hotelier to return early, the Englishman ventures out to explore an abandoned village. In this village, during a raging storm, he encounters several otherworldly beings and is unsure of the exact events of the night.

great short story

wonderful story telling. great prelude to Dracula. really enjoyed this very much. highly recommend

Short but Good Stuff

Love having classics read to me. I never knew this short Dracula tale even existed until now. Apparently the story was rejected for seeming repetitive to the overall writing of the novel Dracula. I think it could have been played upon but I’m not Bram Stoker and he obviously went in the right direction.

Alternative chapter?

I read somewhere this was published after Bram passed away? It wasn’t as great as the original Dracula but man, I love Bram Stokers writing!

Great performance, chilling story

Listened to this at home alone in the dark. Sent a chill down my spine.

Spooky bit of lost content

lovely bit of cut content from of the best horror novels. It could have been linger but I can see why it was cut.

Incredibly short

I knew it would be short but it felt like it was such a short story that was drawn out for so long. But it is Bram Stoker and that involves lengthy descriptions. I liked it, glad I read it for free and didn’t purchase. It did peak my interest at the end about the cemetery and lightning, it reminded me of Dracul by Dacre Stoker and JD Barker, highly recommend that book.

Ok to pass a few minutes

It was old school entertaining. It wasn’t remarkable, but still enjoyable. It was also free!

good enough

I liked the descriptions and the performance, but I had my expectations too high up. Although a bit long for it, is a good preface for Dracula.
