This was a solid story

I really enjoyed the representation present in this book. The characters were relatable and made solid choices. I did feel the story was a little rushed, but overall it's a solid and quick listen

Aliens meet Appalachia

This was my second book of Jason's (though it's my first solo book, the other was a collaboration), and it won't be my last!

Don't Look In The Trees follows Billy and Justin as they're heading to Justin's home in the woods after a bonfire party. Before they leave, a warning pops up on the television: get somewhere safe, don't go outside. Something unknown and strange is happening in the area.

They start the trek home with their friend Billy, but they come across a tree that has fallen on the only road leading there. As they start to work on the trees, they're met with the reason for the warning, and it's more terrifying than they could have ever imagined.

I enjoyed this one, and the narration by Joe Hempel was amazing (as always), but I really wish it was longer. Once it ended, it ENDED. Boom. Here's the climax, and then ope, it's over with a short explanation of what happened afterwards. I liked the characters and the relationships, it just felt like it was missing something.

All in all, a great story!

Don’t Look in the Trees!

This was a great short story. I loved the relationship between the characters and the unknown in the trees. It is especially freaky if you live in the forest!

It’s an Appalachian tale that is a little bit sci-fi and a little bit thriller with a nice reveal. It’s a fast read, and the narration is on point. I enjoyed it!

Is it aliens or something else?

Justin, Billy and Kevin are at a bonfire, enjoying fun times with their friends and drinking. When Justin and Billy want to leave, they get a drunk Kevin into the truck and head to Justin's cabin in the woods. Suddenly a bright light appears in the sky, a tree falls across the road and Billy disappears! Is it aliens or something else?

This short story had it moments of creepiness as Justin and his friends encounter "something" that is attacking people in the area. But, is it aliens? Is anybody safe? What about Justin's father, Frank?

at times, the writing was a bit amateurish, but all in all, it was a quick, enjoyable read. I would have liked to know more about what the creatures were and where they came from. The story was reminiscent of the old 1950's horror movies and the entertainment they brought to us in those simpler times.

Joe Hempel is one of my favorite audiobook narrators and his performance was perfect for this short read. All in all, this was a great way to spend a few mindless hours and I will definitely be looking for more by this author.

Wow! so much more than meets the eye.

This is a story of acceptance wrapped neatly inside of a creature feature! look past the other worldly visitors and you'll see another story entirely.

Entertaining short story

Interesting concept for an invasion story and what tactics aliens may utilize to win the war

Joe does a fantastic job narrating as always that’s why he’s one of the best
If you’re looking for a quick listen, with an equally entertaining bonus story, definitely check this one out

A fun diversion...

Don't Look in the Trees is a sci-fi/horror novella with LGBTQ+ elements about a group of men who are stalked by creatures hiding out in the woods of Appalachia and their ensuing fight for survival. As an LGBTQ+ story, it works well because it explores the budding relationship between two men in rural Appalachia, as well as the reactions of others around them. I found that entertaining and heartwarming to a degree. As a sci-fi/horror story, it has plenty of action and suspense to it, although a) the creatures never seemed to be all that scary and b) everything gets summed up a little too easily in my opinion. There's also a bonus short story at the end unrelated to the main story, which was interesting in its own right. Joe Hempel does a good job with the voice acting and being able to differentiate between all of the various characters, so kudos to him. In all, a good diversion that doesn't overstay its welcome.
