Jannus en Kriek Knoets is min of meer agt jaar oud, en hulle is 'n tweeling. Die Knoets-gesin woon in Huis Deurmekruis, onder afrit 7 van die snelweg, naby die dokke in 'n groot stad. Hulle ouers is Knersius en Soetlief Knoets. Knersius is die speltoetser van 'n groot boekuitgewery. Soetlief is 'n gevaarlike spioen. Maar seker die belangrikste karakter in die verhaal, behalwe die tweeling natuurlik, is hulle oupa. Hy is 'n avonturier, 'n uitvinder en 'n baie onvoorspelbare ou man. As hy nie iewers anders is nie, bly hy onder Huis Deurmekruis in ‘n soort kelderverdieping, waar hy allerhande interessante dinge doen en goeters uitvind in sy laboratorium. Sy brein is so groot en so besig dat dit vir hom moeilik is om aandag aan gewone dinge te gee. Miskien raak hy net bietjie deurmekaar van ouderdom, want hy noem alle ingewikkelde goed "dinges". Hierdie boek vertel hoe Jannus en Kriek hulle oupa beter leer ken, en die storie van hulle eerste avontuur saam.
