Acerca de esta escucha

On a sunny May morning in 1998 in Cortez, Colorado, three desperados in a stolen truck opened fire on the town cop, shooting him 20 times; then they blasted their way past dozens of police cars and disappeared into 10,000 square miles of the harshest wilderness terrain on the North American continent. Self-trained survivalists, the outlaws eluded the most sophisticated law enforcement technology on the planet and a pursuit force that represented more than 75 local, state, and federal police agencies with dozens of SWAT teams, U.S. Army Special Forces, and more than 500 officers from across the country.

This is the first in-depth account of this sensational case, replete with overbearing local sheriffs, Native American trackers, posses on horseback, suspicion of vigilante justice and police cover-ups, and the blunders of the nation’s most exalted crime fighters pursuing outlaws into territory in which only they could survive.

My mistake - just not that interesting

I don't like the way this is delivered, I don't like that it starts at the end, one of those "if he had known" sort of things. But it's history, so it already happened. But still, I just don't like this style. So in the end I just stopped listening. I'd have to be desperate to work up the interest to start again. I am sure it is a compelling read for people who are closer to this story, but to me it's just another story about a the bad end some people I'll never need to care about came to.

Meh

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Very wordy in some parts.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Well since it's a true story, I think just the way it was told didn't capture my attention.

Would you be willing to try another one of Arthur Morey’s performances?

No, I'm not sure if he has some sort of accident or what? He also seems to always be talking in a hushed whisper.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

This book would probably make a better movie.

Any additional comments?

Narration really ruined it for me.

Modern day western meets true crime

Well written true crime in the arid west. An amazing story of an ambushed policeman and the chase to catch his killers.

Only complaint was that when the author presented his theory of what happened he did not always day how he reached his conclusions. Much of it was from police reports, etc. but some of our was not clear. Overall a great book.

A good story. The author failed in one point

While the book has well supported theory, the reference to .233 cartridges is an error.

A fascinating and well researched true crime book

True Crime is not my normal genre, especially since the victims of the crime include members of law enforcement and the story reveals the incredible ability of the bad guys to evade capture despite one of the largest manhunts in the history of the West. The author did a remarkable job researching not only the facts, but separating facts from individual opinion and compelling theories. From re-interviewing key witnesses to taking a critical eye to the evidence of record, Schultz drew me into the story and gave me a new perspective on a story I loosely paid attention to over the last 18 years.

Despite some of the author's personal opinions turning me off initially, as he settled in to tell the story I was truly pulled in and compelled to read on. Unexpected twists emerging out of out-of-fashion theories supported by an abundance of evidence put an entirely different spin on what you've been told about this story if you followed it in the main stream news. Schultz's research connects the dots that just don't add up if you try to swallow the official story fronted by police in 2007. That doesn't make the bad guys any less evil for their actions in 1998, but it does give a more complete and complex story when you look at all of the facts and evaluate all of the evidence.

Narrator cannot read accurately!

A good story, but told in a very irritating non sequencial chronology, creating unnecessary repetitiveness. The narrator kept saying "233 caliber rifle" for .223 cal. He also says PCV, not PVC, when
referring to plastic pipe. It would be ok if it was only once... but repeatedly, it's too much.

Very Detailed

Narration was great! Great story. Very detailed. I would have rather read the hard copy. That way I could go back and review details.

I like true crime stories.

This one was hard to follow at times, because it jumped around a lot, from past to present to future. The narrator was easy to understand, but he talked very quickly, and so many times I would have to go back and re-listen to a portion to understand the details.

not too bad

The story was insightful and covered all angles of the incident. The reading is a bit drab more of a factual tone than a story theme.

Overlook the bad reviews and give it a look it’s worth it

I think our society has become swallowed up by instant gratification and constant electronic stimulation that we can’t fathom reading a book that requires some brain work. This was a great book. Not dry at all. The end of the book was particularly moving
