Acerca de esta escucha

Travelling at high speed in her beloved Hispano-Suiza, accompanied by her maid and trusted companion, Dot; her two adoptive daughters, Jane and Ruth; and their dog, Molly, The Hon Miss Phryne Fisher is off to Queenscliff. She'd promised everyone a nice holiday by the sea with absolutely no murders, but when they arrive at their rented accommodation that doesn't seem likely at all. An empty house, a gang of teenage louts, a fisherboy saved, and the mystery of a missing butler and his wife seem to lead inexorably towards a hunt for buried treasure by the sea. But what information might the curious Surrealists be able to contribute? Phryne knows to what depths people will sink for greed but with a glass of champagne in one hand and a pearl-handled Beretta in the other, no-one is getting past her.

Always a great Miss Fisher mystery

Ready to start a vacation, Miss Fisher, Dot, and Phryne’s “daughters” find the caretakers missing, a plait thief in town, and a smuggling operation. Taking up a young urchin to help, Miss Fisher begins the search for the caretakers, the plait thief, and helps the police bring the smuggling ring to justice. Great story!

The Surrealists are in this one So Much Fun

This entire series is wonderful and this is one of my favorites, mostly because of the surrealists. Kerry Greenwood's historical afterwards are wonderful too.

Phryne up to her usual standard

Phryne takes herself and Dot, her companion, and Ruth and Jane, her two adopted daughters down to Queenscliff for a summer holiday in a borrowed house while her house in Melbourne is being renovated under the watchful eyes of the Butlers. When she arrives, the Johnsons, the caretaker couple who belong to the house are not there and neither is there furniture. The kitchen of the house has been stripped of food and no-one knows where the Johnsons have gone. In the course of finding the missing couple, Phryne gets involved with a film crew, a surrealist party, a treasure hunt and a rum smuggling gang.

This is another great offering from Kerry Greenwood. I wondered how I would like a Fisher audiobook - I have read all the others in hard copy - but found I thoroughly enjoyed it. Stephanie Daniel performs the story well. All in all good value for money.

One of my favorites so far. Phryne, Dot, Ruth, Jane and Molly. Rent a house and adventure moves in during their holiday “vacation,” in Queenscliff.

Much Better than TV Episode

I've seen all the TV episodes and am reading all the books -- but reading out of order. Reading a few books led me to watch the series (it was on Ovation), Now I'm buying books because of the TV series. At first, I bought books for only episodes that were my favorites. Now I'm buying all the books because I'm finding some vary widely from the TV shows.
I discovered this when I bought Unnatural Habits on sale. I feared it would be a rerun but far from it! I hesitated to buy Dead Man's Chest because it was one of my least favorite TV episodes. So different! I thoroughly enjoyed the book!

What I probably liked most about this book was its meandering progress. There are a lot of threads. And each held my interest, interweaving with the others to form a much more complex tapestry than possible in an hour show. Phryne has rented a house by the sea for a vacation, and they arrive to find it's been broken into and all the food is gone. She soon acquires Tinker, a boy helper -- he was close to being sacked next door but Pryne takes him on and soon he becomes a willing worker. I think he's in a later book I read. Servantless, the family adapts; Ruth cooks all the meals (lots of fabulous seafood!) because she wants to become a cook. Jane has a library full of books to explore, and she picks a lock to get into a roomful of bones (hades of Bluebeard -- which seems to be one of the books being read aloud at times), but they seem to belong to the professor (anthropologist?) from whom they're renting the hous.

Early mysteries are who robbed the house (of foodstuffs, leaving valuables locked up) and what has become of the servant couple. There are plenty more mysteries: who is the dreaded pigtail lopper, where is the pirate treasure (which is much more interesting in the book than the mundane chest in the TV show), who tried to murder an actress while a movie is being shot, and how will retribution come to three bad boys. Then there's a local rum smuggling rum ring.... I enjoyed exploring all of these with Phryne and the gang. And it wasn't until the very end that an actual murder was implied.... and, in keeping with the sea/fishing theme, that may be the one that got away....

no rest for the weary

Miss Fisher tries to have a vacation with no mysteries or murders. She walks into a mystery, no fault of her own or at the request of others. realizing there was a murder at the end. "Hey ho," as she says at the end.
