The year was 1877 and Reconstruction was working until Presidential politics removed the union troops from the South unleashing violent cold-blooded men to pray upon black Americans. Bertha and Tucker were raised in the ways of the Elders: maintain your dignity, know your history, and never compromise your values. Their children were more than sharecroppers. Junior, the oldest, was an astute businessman and new leader. Joan was a teacher. Joseph, the brother, no one wanted to fight. Rose fell in love with the wrong man. Gladys, the youngest, helped Rose through tough times. "If the Elders ...

The latest release from the author of Darkness: A Slave's Story, Doris: Return to the Slave Farm, and The Lilac Nurse! “You have no idea who you’re dealin’ with here. He wasn’t just a slave for a few years; he was a slave most of his life. We don’t even know half his story.” George Ambrose 'Sailor' Washington wasn't released from slavery on January 1, 1863, as were most other slaves in the United States. He spent many more years in involuntary servitude. The Slave is historical fiction about the Works Progress Administration's attempt to interview all remaining former slaves ...

Historia
Sometimes small acts of kindness lead to greater things. The author of Darkness: A Slave's Story and The Lilac Nurse brings to life a heartbreaking story of a young boy in 1937 Missouri. Jeff Nebeker-Johnson creates a poignant tale of suffering and survival. The United States Depression of the 1930s was a difficult period between two world wars. Americans from all walks of life found themselves without food, work and a clear future. Danny, an eleven-year-old boy, learns that because of his father's shrewd financial tactics, they survive well with food and money. But circumstances can change...

I've read/listened to MUCH better
The beginning of this does say written for a middle school audience BUUUT I read beyond this as a 6-8th grader. I'm 51, and I listened for 30+ minutes and it's like listening to a 1st grader poorly read it's first book with the faultering sentences, stops, and all..I can't finish this junk. Don't waste your time.
