Acerca de esta escucha

Rudely yanked from cryo-sleep to find herself among a crew of modded humans in deep space, and on a burning spaceship, no less, Daisy's world just got a whole lot more complicated. And it was only going to get worse.

As if the creepy cyborg and the mechanically-enhanced human crew weren't bad enough, what was supposed to be a simple flight home to Earth was going horribly wrong. A deadly plot was unfolding. One that could jeopardize the entire human race. And Daisy found herself stuck in the middle.

It wasn't her job, saving the world, and she sure as hell didn't want it. But the snarky young woman didn't have a choice. But with Daisy reluctantly coming to the rescue, would humanity even stand a chance?

Stayed up far too late listening to this book!

I will admit, it has been a while since I have read traditional science fiction. My tastes usually run more towards the fantasy genre. When a friend suggested I might enjoy this series, I thought I'd give it a try.

I'm glad I did.

The author gives some details about Daisy and her crew-mates on a spaceship returning to Earth. Not everything is as it appears, though, and Daisy faces a number of dangers in her efforts to unravel the motives of those around her. As events develop, Daisy (and the reader) start to wonder if her fears are justified, or purely imaginary.

There are references to 'vintage' space movies the crew watches, including several well-known quotes. (No, I'm not going to tell you which ones! Finding them is part of the fun of reading this book.)

Even though It's outside of my usual reading, I found myself one night staying up 3 hours later than I should have, because I wanted to know "what happens next??". I'm hooked.

On to the next book!

Tragedy of errors

An interesting introduction to a new world. Unfortunately Daisy made so many dumb decisions based on her unexplained prejudices and lack of information that should have been given to her early on, it was hard to listen to without constantly rolling my eyes. Now that she knows what is really going on, I am interested in listening to the next book, but only thanks to its more positive reviews.

Really enjoyed this one!

The main character was relatable and interesting. the performance was good, and did not distract me from the story. and it left me really wanting to know what happens next! starting book 2 right now!

I was so confused at first

The book started off pretty good then things got really confusing and hard to follow then they tied it all up in a neat little bow in the end and suddenly everything made since. I liked it enough im gonna pick up the next one.

Some questionable choices by the author.

The first thing that grabbed my attention was the incorrect use of the term "cyborg" to refer to Androids/robots.This is made extra awkward by the prevalence of actual cyborgs.

There's also a bit much fantasy in this sci-fi for my taste considering it's not full blown sci-fantasy. Like the main character's survival is at one point contingent on their use of Chi Energy to create heat. Like that's a real thing.

The preamble to the main plot carries on for a bit too long and in too much detail to the point where there's a review of this book from someone who genuinely believed they'd started a trashy romance novel.

The real genre is MILD SPOILER ALERT: Sci-fi/Horror, and incorporates a bit of a romance plot at the start just like you might see in a lot of stereotypical horror movies.

In many ways I think the more awkward parts of the story stem from the fact that the author writes this EXACTLY like a movie and not like a book, and some tropes start to feel really silly and unbelievable because you as the reader experience them over such a long period of time and not all in a rush.

Not a fan.

I just found Daisy to be entirely unlikable as a character.

The entire plot revolves around her metaphorically putting her hands over her ears and going "NAHNAHNAH I CAN'T HEAR YOU NAHNAHNAH". Over. And over.

If you've ever seen a movie where the characters have zero social or communications skills and what could have been a 15 second explanation of an awkward situation turns into a 90 minute cringe-fest, you now know what this book is like. Think the American Pie movies.

It’s a gimmick went on to long.

I’ll admit, this book kept me reading. It was exciting fun and fast paced, BUT. The main character, Daisy is kept in the dark almost for the entirety of the book and that is just too long. Even though she’s supposed to be extremely intelligent it comes off as her being stupid, and it’s frustrating to read. I want to read the next book, I really do. But I’m afraid that the same literary device will be deployed. I have enough frustration and irritation in my life than to pay for it .

SPOILER ALERT? From here on out it is sensitive information if you want to book to reveal itself to you the way the author intended. You might want to stop here, but I’ll try not to give too much away.

This story is a mash up between 2 movies : Steven Spielberg’s A. I., and Independence Day with Will Smith. The whole thing is told from the POV of Daisy the ships brilliant communications technician. It mostly takes place on a ship heading home to earth in outer space. The narration Is masterful. It might’ve been the major reason I continued to listen, and it might be a major reason why I will continue to listen to any more books in this series.

The book opens with the crew being abruptly awaken from cryogenic sleep because a fire is on board that the ships AI cannot detect. Daisy feels that something is wrong almost from the beginning the book. Most of her fellow crew mates have multiple artificial replacement parts, and she has an irrational prejudice against them. During their cryogenic sleep they were drip fed information through an brain stimulation device. Daisy tweaks this device and removes the safeguards, so it appears that she is descending into madness. Then her best friend is “accidentally” killed and she just goes off the rails. From this point on everyone is out to get her , and she needs to get off the ship and warn earth about an AI insurrection.

She is pursued through the ship, makes it off by stealing the shuttle and makes it to earth. Through this whole process things aren’t adding up but she sticks to her guns and still believes the AI’s are out to get her. She finds fleshless cyborgs on earth but no people. She is still running strong with her original hypothesis and she refuses to except the reality of what is right in front of her…. ALIENS.
