Bad Narrator

The narrator makes everyone seem way older than they are. Good story. Kinda hard to suffer thru.

Too Drawn Out

The areas that would be the 6-7/8th part of the book was incredibly overdrawn. it provided backstory that was necessary, but too delved into and overthought. it adds more suspense sometimes which is great from King but in this instance i was not a fan for like, 3 hours.

Anxiety inducing but sadly dated

This book certainly feels like a 'KING' novel. I had no issue with the narrator's attempt to perform the story though listening her to Tad's voice gets old VERY quickly. I don't fault her on a personal level but maybe not the best approach for a book like this. I think the main issue with the book is it's just very DATED, especially when it comes to it's portrayal of women. Of course it was written years ago and takes place in a bygone era, but I feel my main issue with reading King's books is he tends to portray his female characters in a very stereotypical almost chauvinistic way. It's always VERY clear that the person writing is a man who is doing as satisfactory a Job as someone of his time. But it becomes very hard to care about a character who feels like a sniveling negative stereotype. I get the feeling King himself does not have the highest opinion of women on a personal level. So many of these woman are meek, weak and hysterical.

That being said. The book itself does some things right. The fact that you get to see some of the story from Cujo's point of view. This book calls to memory the wave of panic that swept through small towns during Rabies out breaks and reminds me of my own experience with a Rabid animal as a child. The fact that it's a very grounded and self contained book only adds to the claustrophobia of the story. It's a wonderfully tense ride and tragic in so many ways. There are so many instances when the protagonist is SO CLOSE to being saved and then something just HAPPENS to happen to keep that safety at bay. I feel this is something King has always done very well, building that sense of hopelessness and resignation of doom. It's very clear you're not going to get a happy ending, that's not King's style. So if you're sensitive to children or animals being in harms way this is not the book for you. You HAVE to go into it expecting there to be tragedy and pain. I definitely think the book is WORLDS different and better than the movie, if only because it retains all it's nuance that was forsaken for the sake of cheap scares in the film. It was fun to compare the two as the movie had made such an impression on me as a child. You will never look at a St. Bernard the same way again but the wonderful thing about the book is you get a sense of understanding and sympathy for Cujo that you just can't get in the movie because the movie doesn't bother to add that inner thought process. Cujo's journey into Rabies madness was probably the saddest part of the story though as a mother the idea of my child being in a situation like this is horrifying. I think following Cujo's reasoning and understanding the reasons for his attacks makes it hard to see him as a monster like he was portrayed in the film. The entire time he's just trying to be a good boy and it's heart breaking. But a very interesting choice. Cujo's arc alone is worth the read. Though i recommend getting a hard copy instead of listening to this particular recording. Bless the Narrator but she's better suited for something more whimsical or child aimed than a King novel.

Great Story...iffy narration

One of King's best!! The major issue I had with the narrator was her performance of Tad. I was close to bailing on the Audible version once the whining started. Her voice was so shrill it was almost unbearable.

All bite no bark

Cujo is a great book. It has a very unique tone and an interesting cast of characters. This book isn’t about some dog on a rampage, it builds very slowly and feels engaging throughout, when things finally do go down the book takes a turn for the suspenseful. It’s not an all time great King novel, but it delivers and then some on the concept of the killer dog, the stuff of nightmares. My only complaint is it feels a tad long and sometimes the scenes with Cujo feel repetitive. But that’s all. Enjoy!

Creepy Voice

This lady does the creepiest and most annoying voices. I've listened to about 30 to 40 audible books, none less than 10hrs, most being 48hrs, and she is the only one that actually made me cringe while listening to it.

Detailed and full of emotion, what a story!

The emotion that is put into almost every characters thought has you feeling like you really know that person even if they were a back ground character. This book is cringe worthy and only the best possible way!

great book gets better as it goes

really good book but what I really liked was the ending. never thought I was emotionally invested until the end and then realized my connection with all the characters. the narration seemed off but over time like with most books I fell in love with narration and was sad when it ended. had trouble starting this book and getting into it cause I already new the basic summary of the book from the movie and references in pop culture but neither if those did the story or characters justice. really a good book I looked over for a long tine and like all king books the proof was the book itself. very good listen would recommend to others.
