Acerca de esta escucha
A misread map, a sudden storm, a forgotten headlamp - and suddenly a leisurely hike turns into a treacherous endeavor.
In the past decade, inexpensive but sophisticated navigation devices and mobile phones have led to alarming levels of overconfidence on the trail. Adding to this worrisome trend, the increasing popularity of ventures into mountainous terrain has led hikers seeking solitude - or an adrenaline rush - into increasingly remote or risky forays.
Sandy Stott, the "Accidents" editor at the journal of the Appalachian Mountain Club, delivers both a history and a celebration of the search and rescue workers who save countless lives in the White Mountains - along with a plea for us not to take their steadfastness and bravery for granted. Filled with tales of astonishing courage and sobering tragedy, Critical Hours will appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and armchair adventurers alike.

On a mountain somewhere above treeline, in some of the coldest and worst winter conditions imaginable, two men lie unconscious in the snow as explosive winds batter the nearby summits. In The Last Traverse: Tragedy and Resilience in the Winter Whites, Ty Gagne masterfully lays out the events that led up to an epic and legendary rescue attempt in severe and dangerous winter conditions in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. More than a cautionary tale, it is a tribute to all the volunteers and professionals who willingly put themselves in harm's way to save lives.

On February 15, 2015, Kate Matrosova, an avid mountaineer, set off before sunrise for a traverse of the Northern Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Late the following day, rescuers carried her frozen body out of the mountains amid some of the worst weather ever recorded on these deceptively rugged slopes. At thirty-two, Matrosova was healthy and had already summited much larger mountains. What went wrong? Where You'll Find Me offers possible answers to that question.

On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused. Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day.

In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.

Historia
In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

But No Shortcuts to the Top is as much about the man who would become the first American to achieve that goal as it is about his stunning quest. As Viesturs recounts the stories of his most harrowing climbs, he reveals a man torn between the flat, safe world he and his loved ones share and the majestic and deadly places where only he can go.

Historia
As a park ranger with the National Park Service's law enforcement team, Andrea Lankford led search and rescue missions in some of the most beautiful (and dangerous) landscapes across America, from Yosemite to the Grand Canyon. But though she had the support of the agency, Andrea grew frustrated with the service's bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, and left the force after twelve years. Two decades later, however, she stumbles across a mystery that pulls her right back where she left off: three young men have vanished from the Pacific Crest Trail.

At 28,251 feet, the world's second-tallest mountain, K2 thrusts skyward out of the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan. Climbers regard it as the ultimate achievement in mountaineering, with good reason. Four times as deadly as Everest, K2 has claimed the lives of seventy-seven climbers since 1954. In August 2008 eleven climbers died in a single thirty-six-hour period on K2–the worst single-event tragedy in the mountain's history and the second-worst in the long chronicle of mountaineering in the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges.

When Edmund Hillary first conquered Mt. Everest, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was at his side. Indeed, for as long as Westerners have been climbing the Himalaya, Sherpas have been the unsung heroes in the background. In August 2008, when eleven climbers lost their lives on K2, the world’s most dangerous peak, two Sherpas survived. They had emerged from poverty and political turmoil to become two of the most skillful mountaineers on earth. Based on unprecedented access and interviews, Buried in the Sky reveals their astonishing story for the first time.

Bill Walker ("Skywalker"), who stands 6'11", might seem like anything but average. Yet in a brutally honest tone, he lays to bare all his considerable weaknesses and fears. Among these are crushing weight loss and fatigue, along with a fear of getting lost or a bear stealing his food. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT )is the perfect place for an average person to do something extraordinary. Nonetheless, he is bound and determined to hike the PCT which - at 2,663 miles - runs all the way from Mexico to Canada.

Human flight is one of the last great challenges on Earth. Not like how the Wright brothers flew, but how we fly in our dreams. This is the goal of the Wingsuit Landing Project: to soar through the sky at speeds up to one hundred miles per hour and to land without the aid of a parachute. This project is the creation of 37-year-old Jeb Corliss, Jr., a Southern Californian who seeks to emulate a mode of flight more like a flying squirrel than bird or plane.

As 1909 dawned, the greatest jewels of exploration - set at the world's frozen extremes - lay unclaimed: the North and South Poles and the so-called "Third Pole", the pole of altitude, located in unexplored heights of the Himalaya. Before the calendar turned, three expeditions had faced death, mutiny, and the harshest conditions on the planet to plant flags at the furthest edges of the Earth.

Henry Worsley spent his life idolizing Ernest Shackleton, the 19th-century polar explorer who tried to become the first person to reach the South Pole and later sought to cross Antarctica on foot. Worsley felt an overpowering connection to those expeditions. In 2008, Worsley set out across Antarctica with two other descendants of Shackleton's crew, battling the freezing, desolate landscape and life-threatening physical exhaustion. He soon felt compelled to go back. In 2015, Worsley bid farewell to his family and embarked on his most perilous quest: to walk across Antarctica alone.

In October-November 2013, Patrick Taylor crossed the Rocky Mountains alone on foot. He passed through one of the largest wilderness areas in the lower 48 to reach and retrace the route of Lewis and Clark in the winter. In 1973, Norma Cobb, her husband Lester, and their five children pulled up stakes in the lower 48 and headed north to Alaska to follow a pioneer dream of claiming land under the Homestead Act. The only land available lay north of Fairbanks near the Arctic Circle where grizzlies outnumbered humans 20 to one. In addition to fierce winters and predatory animals, the Alaskan frontier drew the more unsavory elements of society's fringes. From the beginning, the Cobbs found themselves pitted in a life or death feud with unscrupulous neighbors who would rob from new settlers.

There are better books
Not Without Peril is a much better read of the same stories. Narration is dry and choppy

Rich with history and tales
As a hiker in the northeast, and one interested in SAR work, , I found this entertaining anf poignant t times. I do think there is a select audience that this book caters to.

Book matches book description.
I don’t know why this book is getting a lot of hate on here. It was exactly how it was described. It was a book about SAR history in the Whites. It had plenty stories about real rescues to make it relevant. To those complaining about the acronyms: their definitions are explained at least once for every agency, but more importantly it’s how each agency id’s themselves! Don’t hate on the author for using them.

hard to listen to reader.
The story is outstanding. The reader has a set cadence of reading that I found very distracting and annoying; such so that I had to concentrate on listening for the benefit of the story.

Superb deeply researched analysis of SAR
This book provides stories, analysis, and viewpoints of SAR in the White Mountains. It includes individual cases, surveying what brought the victim to that point, and the immediate and long term perspectives of SAR support team members and organizations. The author causes you to engage with SAR ethos from a variety of viewpoints (don't have it, volunteer, state funded) and encourages a thoughtful wondering of why we go into the wilderness and how and under what terms we remain connected to society when we do.
I gained a deeper appreciation of the efforts of SAR and reflected on my own decision making process, biases, and motivations. We listened to this book while returning from a February ascent of Mt. Washington, and that certainly helped visualize the extreme terrain and conditions hikers and SAR can face.
Definitely recommend to those who wander.

Narrator not so great but a great story
The narrator took a while to get use to. Other than that it was a great experience. I would recommend to anyone who spends time in the woods.

Search and rescue in NH's White Mountains
First, I live in the White Mountains and hike and ski. With this background, I found the book very interesting. Reading other reviews, I think this book is widely misunderstood by others. It is not a dramatic story of search and rescue, and it is not a collection of adventure stories about people getting in trouble in the mountains. There are other books that better serve those interests. Instead, it is about the people and organizations who go into harm's way to help those in trouble. In New Hampshire there are many such groups all with their own acronyms and idiosyncrasies. If you are interested in learning more about search and rescue, including disputes about funding and philosophy of approach, this is the book for you. With regard to the narrator, I think he did a fine job although he did botch the local pronunciations, such as Coos County and Berlin, but pretty much everyone who isn't from this area does mispronounce these place names.

Terrible Narration
I don't mean to bag on Kyle Tait but he made the book very difficult to listen to. While the subject matter is very interesting, especially for someone with a background in rescue, it is 100% not necessary for the narrator to take a dramatic pause after every 5th word. I feel like I could have gotten through this book in half the time if he had just read it. It was very frustrating and I will be avoiding him in the future, no matter how interesting the book may be. He just ruined it.

Just incredible it took place in my backyard.
Sandy’s book transporters me back home to Franconia. I spent most of my days they’re climbing and hiking the amazing mountains surrounding my town..
We were always hearing about SAR efforts.
I live in Utah now, and I’d like to thank Sandi for transporting me back to my hometown for several nourishing hours.
