The gripping account of how the Royal family really operates, from the journalist who has spent years studying them. Who really runs the show and, as Charles III begins his reign, what will happen next?

Throughout history, the British monarchy has relied on its courtiers—the trusted advisers in the King or Queen's inner circle—to ensure its survival as a family and a pillar of the country. Today, as ever, a carefully selected team of people hidden from view steers the royal family's path between public duty and private life. Queen Elizabeth II, after a remarkable 70 years of service, saw the final seasons of her reign without her husband Philip to guide her. Now, a newly ascended Charles seeks to define what his future as King, and that of his court, will be.

The question of who is entrusted to guide the royals has never been more vital. Yet, as the tensions within the family are exposed to global scrutiny like never before, the task these courtiers face has never been more challenging. With a dark cloud hanging over Prince Andrew as well as Harry and Meghan's controversial departure from royal life, William and Kate—equipped with a very 21st century approach to press and public relations—now hold the responsibility of making an ancient institution relevant for the decades to come. In fascinating and explosive detail, Valentine Low explores the previously unknown relationship between modern courtiers and the royal family.

Courtiers pulls back the veil to reveal an ever-changing system of complex characters, shifting alliances, and a battle of ideas over what the future of the institution should be. This is the inside story of how the monarchy really works, at a pivotal moment in its history.

The Author should never have read this. Always use a trained actor. The voice is old, stuffy, mumbling, and lackluster. As an American, I had a very difficult time understanding the material because of his accent which is kind of old fashion. I had to listen hard, and that wasn’t enjoyable. I was familiar with most of the material, but a few good insights.

Good Story Bad Narration

I don't know if this book has any surprises for the average British citizen; but as an American, it is quite interesting and enlightening too. it gives a much better picture of the Palace staff, how they operate, especially with the Royal family. Only several chapters deal with Harry and Meghan and all their ongoing trauma, but still very interesting(!
This is an excellent book, well worth the time. The narration is also excellent !

Very Good Book

Well read, albeit a little speedy (which can be adjusted). I found this extremely interesting with regard to the internecine, and official, complications of the ‘too many cooks’ theory in running the Royal household, along with new conversations regarding the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and their subsequent withdrawal from duty.
Recommend, with proviso- read Spare first.

Excellent insight into a working Royal class family

The author is the narrator. Tom Bower has a much better audio voice but Valentine is okay. To b honest I downloaded it because I sleep with audiobooks read by male Brittons in order to drown the loud snores of my husband. Regarding his voice and accent they are okay not the best. He seems rather in a hurry. The book is excellent regarding facts and temperament of the courtiers and the Principals they work for. Valentine was a journalist who was on the trip to South Africa with Meghan and Harry and witnessed their conduct towards others. He gives historical accounts (some stories I knew others I didn’t). I’ll keep the audio simply for sleeping and to listen to while I work at my sewing table. Is not really juicy until you get to the current RF.

Historical account of Courtiers

Cover misleading. Very little about MeAgain and Harry.. little about William and Kate. Not interesting imo. But no offense to the author. Just not my cup of tea. I’m American and maybe that’s a reason this is so foreign to me. Hard for me to follow.

Ehhh..

I loved the Book but found the
Voice of the Narrator most irritating. It is so important to chose a Narrator with clear

Loved the Story but not the Narrator

A must read/listen for anyone interested in the history & current affairs of the Monarchy. It exceeded my expectations & was extensively researched. Valentine, I hope you’re beyond proud of your work- I know I am. I learned so much & I’m ready for Part 2

I have listened to this book more than one time. It has a lot of information that you have to pay attention.

Enjoyed this book.

First off, I wore really good headphones listening to this and could barely understand the narrator 1/3 of the time. His gravelly voice lacks clarity. He simply read it like anyone would. He could have added a bit more to the performance. The story seemed course. I’m no prude but there are certain words that should NEVER be heard, i.e. the c-nt being number one. And to hear it from British upper crust is more appalling. Grew up in a tough working class Chicago neighborhood. Never heard that word once!

Disappointing

Loved that Valentine narrated this himself! I’m a huge admirer of his journalism and this book is well researched, enlightening and a fun read.

Well Researched and Interesting!
