I love Avery

The stars are for the books not the narrator. The books actually do have mysteries even though they are easily solved. The characters are great and even though some readers find Avery hard to take I love her.

The narration is another thing. With the first book there are several mispronounced words, Jake sounds somewhat like an old man, and I'm not really sure what the deal with Eliot is. There are pauses when he speaks so it is very slow.

However, by the third book it is much better. Eliot speaks like a normal person and Jake isn't old sounding.

loved them all

Books 1 through 3 were hard to put down. Amanda M. Lee has a way with making me laugh and cry through them. Avery, Elliot and Jake are great. Grandpa makes me laugh also. I love to read books that get my emotions involved. I can't wait to read more of the books.

Ok

Nothing special. Avery is a bit too proud she's rude and antisocial. I realize those inner thoughts are supposed to be humorous , but they were often distracting (and not funny after the first few). But, it was an enjoyable way to listen and clean house.

Cute storyline

Funny, well written storylines. Light hearted mysteries with AWESOME NARRATION. The series is definitely worth a listen.

Intriguing stories, horrible narration

Sometimes the story dialogue can be a bit obnoxious, but overall, the story line and mystery is pretty intriguing and good. I actually enjoy the premises, aside from the major focuses on the random comments of racism and homophobia- I cant quite tell what point she’s trying to make there (I feel it’s really unnecessary, either attack the issue of racism and homophobia, or just drop it). But the narrator kills me. The only practical and realistic voice she gives is Avery. All the guys have annoying voices, and she narrates them to speak as if they are always attacking or idiots. The women she narrates either sound like stoners (including Carly who is not a stoner) or annoying hyenas. It’s just really annoying and far from unrealistic. And I get its a fictional story but it’s kinda always at a ten in terms of exaggeration when it’d be more enjoyable if it wasn’t always monotone - but at the level of 10 exaggeration

Narrator does male voices badly

The male voices sound like loud goblins. Horrible!! Only three of the man speak normally mostly but the rest, ouch!! She gets super loud and sounds like a crazy goblin. Very distracting from books that were well written and I would have enjoyed more if not for Angel Clark.

Hooked on Phonics

Storyline pretty good. Narrator has problems with different voices, when she attempts a diiferent sound, she makes the characters sound like they have speech impediments, retarted or just graduated from Hooked on Phonics class. Except for that I enjoyed the story, but won't get the rest of series due to narrator.

Hard to listen

The story line is pretty good but the narration is lacking. The male character narration does not sound natural and being from southeast Michigan I am struggling with the mispronunciation of local street names.

A wonderful set of books!

Amanda M Lee is a fantastic story writer. She is funny, snarky, and her mysteries have enough twist, turns and side issues to keep you guessing and interested to the very end. Angel Clark brings the characters of the Avery Shaw mystery series alive. She is animated and a joy to listen too. This three book series is a wonderful buy and a great choice for listen in the car, plane, train, while doing chores, exercising and number of things. You won't be disappointed.

much better by book 2

don't be dissuaded by the torturous pronunciation in the 1st few chapters, the narrator improves as she relaxes...the cozy mystery starts a little flat too, but also fleshes out later... characters, conversation & humor become more believable...
