Should I buy the book?

I own all of the Preston and Child titles, my favorite authors, this audio version is the worst I have ever heard. The quality is not very good, the volume comes and goes making it hard to listen in a car. As for the narrator he struggles badly with female voices, he flat out ruins Constance Green in this story. I am seriously considering buying the book because the audio is ruining the story for me.

FINALLY!

Jefferson Mays is back! I had to return this book last year because of the terrible narration by the previous narrator. I was so excited when I found the narration had a redo and Jefferson Mays is back. Rene is missed but Jefferson Mays is just as good. Thank you!!

Good Story, Horrible Narration and Production

As usual, Preston and Child came up with a good story. Some of the other Pendergast books have been better, but this was entertaining...

I could barely hear and understand the narrator. His attempts at a soft-spoken southern accent were usually difficult to hear when driving - I'm not sure if this was the fault of the narrator or the producer, but it certainly impacted my enjoyment of the book. Scott Brick and Rene Auberjonois were FAR better...

The narrator just ruined it for me

I pre-ordered this books a while ago and was really looking forward to it until the narrator just ruined it for me. His Constance voice was terrible and made it really hard to concentrate on the story.

Great except for narration

The narrator has managed to make not only Constance but also Pendergast sound like Katherine Hepburn in her golden years, most annoying.

Weird

I have read all the agent Pendergast novels - getting hooked by the first one "Relic". Unfortunately I found that the last 2 or three were weak, however this one started out strong and kept strong until the last quarter of the story to the ending. I won't ruin it for others but will say it was hard to put aside my disbelief. While many of Pendergast novels deal with the "weird" this one may have stretched too far. I miss the days of when Pendergast was dealing with his villainous brother. The early books were the best. I have a feeling the authors are tired of their character - while their fans are not. As an aside it took some getting used to the new narrator. He needs to work on his female voices - they all sound like old crones. And at times his male voices blend together making it difficult to determine who is speaking. Yet despite my criticisms, I will most probably buy another Agent Pendergast novel should the authors publish a sequel to this one.

LOVE the Pendergast novels....this was no exception...can't wait for the next one to come out

Great Story - Questionable Narrator

I think that I would have loved this book, if it weren't for the narrator's treatment of Constance's voice. His presentation of her voice was so loud and harsh, that I found it difficult to listen when 'Constance' was speaking. She was also acting somewhat unusually for Constance in this storyline (in my opinion, in any case), but I'm now not sure how much I allowed the narrator's voice to color my interpretation of what she was saying/doing.

The narrator did fairly well with Pendergast's voice, with the exception of the fact that sometimes it was so quiet as to be difficult to hear.

The volume varied so greatly between different characters, (Pendergast words barely a whisper, followed by another character's booming voice), that it had me turning the volume up and down, trying to get to a setting where I could make out what all the characters were saying, without damaging my hearing during the loud parts.

OK, enough whining about the narrator. The story itself was very intriguing and somewhat unusual -- in other words it was a pretty typical Preston & Child creation. I can't say much about the plot without spoiling it for future readers. Let's just say that it tied into some actual historical happenings in a surprising, but pleasing way. There is also a bit of a teaser at the end to make sure you are anxious for the next installment.

and it's Pendergast, jumping it! So long pretty Constance - no merits for Mr. deMeritt, he makes Constance sound like an old hag. R.I.P. Renee, no one could do Pendergast like you, we miss you dearly.
