Poor Constance

The worst Pendergast book to date.
The narration… god where to begin?
I think the narrator came in cold with zero prior knowledge or even the slightest idea who these characters are. His Pendergast is meh, his Coldmoon is unlikeable, and his Constance… her dusky contralto, her wit, and class are nowhere. Instead we get this weird, aged, Bostonian Kathryn Hepburn impersonation. Jarring and horrid.
The story crosses into ridiculous and the ending, with that wretched Constance voice was wasted. Save the credit and buy the book. The story is still absurd but at least you won’t have to listen to Constance Hepburn.

Good beginning..ending jumped the shark

i always enjoy Preston and Child books. This one takes the reader thru a whirwind of stories that eventually come together. The ending, is a bit more fantastical than I am normally used to for the authors.

Rene you are missed!

Wow, I guess this is going to be my last Pendergast audio book. I loved Rene so much as a narrator! His performance was flawless and he was AP to the core I thought Jeffrey Mays did an OK job, but the new narrator is terrible. He makes Constance sound like an old shrew, Coldmoon a nasty bad guy and AP is no way the southern gentleman I have come to love.

Poor audio

The varying character voices were sometimes hard to hear. I was constantly replaying some portions in order to understand what they were saying. I do not have poor hearing. I have listened to over 20 audio books and this one was not as good audio-wise.

Sub-Standard Audio

While the narrator's voice was fine, and the variation of voices for the characters was pretty good, it's the sound quality I have a problem with. I feel like the narrator was speaking too softly - which forced me to increase the volume to a level I generally never have to use. And then - with the volume elevated - the narrator suddenly speaks louder, or perhaps at a normal level - the volume is instantly, painfully too loud. I had to constantly adjust the volume through the entire book. I would have stopped listening to this title out of irritation, but for the fact I'm a fan of this series. If not for the lackluster audio, I would have enjoyed this book.

Narrator did a poor job

The narrator definitely made a difference in my ability to enjoy the book. His Attempts at Southern accents was abysmal and the voice used for Constance Green made her sound as old as she was. I prefer her more youthful sounding voice in previous audible books. There were times when one of the characters sounded as if was doing a terrible imitation of Jack Nicholson. As for Coldmoon, he always sounded angry, even when there was no reason to use that type of tone. The narrator did a terrible job, so much so, that l almost stopped listening to the book, but the storyline kept me listening.

Great story/poor performance

I felt the performance of Miss Green was below par and ruined her character.

Please don’t do sound effects.

Story is great, narrator makes a good effort for the accents (though his choice for Constance’s voice defies logic. Why does she sound like a 1930’s radio announcer?). But why, dear heavens why, did they add sound effects at the climax?

The new reader can’t compare with the old reader

Please get the old reader back he can make the book come alive so well.

Good Narration

While other reviewers have disliked the narration of this book - as it is a new narrator for a Prendergast novel - I enjoyed it.

The tone of Constance Green reminded me of what I remember from childhood of Katherine Hepburn - very sharp and witty - which I found to be more in line with what I think of her character.

I also enjoyed the change in Pendergast - the slow essy drawl.

And Coldmoon is still a fresh character so it is good to have him developing. I hope they partner moving forward.

As to the story - there's a little fantasy in there which reminded me of Relic... Which I loved!!! Yes it's farfetched - but I listen for enjoyment and to escape everyday reality.

I am going to miss Constance - I'm hoping there is a spin off series and that they have her start an investigation firm.
