Acerca de esta escucha
Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a developmental disorder that affects social interaction, communication, and behavior. Previously thought to be solely a genetic disorder, recent research on ASD explores how the gut microbiome may play a significant role in the development of autism and even in the severity of its ongoing symptoms.
But what even is the gut microbiome and why is it important?
Your microbiome is made up of millions of microorganisms that live in your gut and impact all parts of your health. Your gut microbiome plays a role in your immune system, digestive system, and even affects your mood and how well your brain functions.
New research even suggests the microbiome health of the mother (and eventually of the infant) may greatly impact a baby’s neurodevelopmental processes. We now know that problems in the gut-brain axis (the connection between your gut and your brain) plays a crucial role in the development of ASD. Early dysbiosis, or an imbalance in the gut microbiota, has been linked to an increased risk of ASD.
Perhaps even more fascinating is what this area of study can offer to children and individuals who already have autism. Why? Because the severity of ASD symptoms may be based on how healthy (or not) someone’s gut microbiome is. It isn’t a surprise that GI symptoms, such as abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea are all too common for those with autism. Problems in the gut microbiome causing inflammation and altered gut motility may be to blame.
Is there anything that can be done to heal and ensure the gut microbiome is working as well as it should?
Yes!
Read along as we explore the current therapies available (and still in the research stage) to give you a balanced look at healing your child’s gut microbiome and hopefully improving their symptoms and life with ASD.
While we still have much to learn about the gut-brain axis and its connection to ASD, the research in this field is exciting and promising. A lot has been unboxed in this power-packed book for you! Discover amazing ways that your gut microbiome affects your health and well-being, and ways you can support and heal the microbiome of those living with ASD.
